I loved the first book of the trilogy and recommended it ...

I loved the first book of the trilogy and recommended it to pretty much everyone I know who reads serious literature and a fair number of people who might not. It is also the case that I was once a huge student of Italiant culture and lived in the house of some prominant leftist newspaper people as an exchange student in high-school. So, the events of this book speak to a deep (if somewhat cooled) passion of mine that other readers might or might not share. However, all the same, I found the second and third books altogether more difficult to read. While the writing is phenomenal in its minute psychological detail and insights into class and gender and how ideology gets used as a currency in social games, it is difficult and not always pleasant reading -- a slog at times-- as the inner-conflicts of the narrative become more intense and her personality less pleasant. I was never going to give up, but I didn't always find joy in this book. In short: read it, but save it for that moment in your life when you have the patience to deal with a literary friend who is difficult, conflicted, and at times even unlikeable.

Elena Ferrante made me revive trhough her vivid writing the time and the places where I grew up. I enjoyed reading all the four books of
Neapolitan novels. I think that she lived trough those novels, then she decided that was time to let her readers disclose that period of very hard time people lived trough it. The emphasis of friendship between Lena and Lila has been the focal point of the many changes that took place in that dilapidated area of Naples. For us Neapolitans having lived during the postwar period, friendship was something sacred
to cherish. Ferrante is also telling us that education is very important in order to overcome the emptiness and the ignorance of a past
regime had was imposed on our parents.She also describe the struggles and sacrifices the young people had to overcome in a time of
have and have not. Lena helpd by her friend Lila made her life in the right way, but Lila as the other girls preferred to follow the life of married women and being provided for what they never had as children. Ferrante ,however, empower Lena's ambition as a writer just like
herself.Fiction or Not?....I myself could identify ,as I already said, trough the different stages of these young women of the old neighborhood.I decided to leave and made my life in the USA. Very sad to read the story of the lost child. Ferrante's description of greed and self-destruction, of once content and simple people, now living trough drugs addiction, smuggling goods, abuse of the working class,
political dishonesty, camorra, killings,robberies. I've seen all the described changes, visiting throughout the years my relatives and my childhood friends.

How do such intelligent women make such poor choices in life?

I did not think Volume Three of this extraordinary soon to be tetralogy was up to the standards of the first two books. Then again, perhaps I am just getting tired, as I have read all three over the last few weeks. As that fact indicates, I did find the work gripping, and Volume Three was no different at least through the middle of the book.

As usual, the emotional link between the two women, now in their twenties and early thirties is intense, and vividly rendered. Beyond that, the depiction of the union organizing and fascist and anti-fascist strife was done very well. I have read little like it.

Nevertheless, for me this whole series has major flaws. While it is very upscale chick lit and an entertaining read, perhaps the stuff of a major television mini-series, this is not great literature. There is far too much dependence on mindless coincidence. Simlarly, the introduction of Elena's younger sister Elisa as an important character late in the book, without any preparation is a major flaw. As usual, for the most part, the minor characters are only lightly drawn and are virtually indistinguishable.

But it is the major characters who gave me most pause. Lila becomes in this volume nearly a character out of science fiction. She has almost superhuman powers. She is prescient, beautiful, and every man falls ineluctably in love with/lusts after her. It is too much. Similarly, after three volumes and 1200 pages, it is clear that Elena is stuck on the womanizer Nino, but I defy anyone to tell me why. There is no basis for it outside of Elena's psyche, and she is not sharing that with us.

The action is melodramatic, operatic. The attempts at explanation of the ladies' feelings are sophistical. We never really know what Lila and Elena are thinking. They switch at a moment's notice and there is never any real explanation for the changes. Each of them lacks an observing ego--something characters always exhibit in the best art--getting to the heart of what makes them tick. After all this sturm and drang, Elena still doesn't know herself and is still almost totally dependent on others to get along in life. I won't spoil the end of the book except to say that to me it was morally and psychologically disappointing in the extreme.

I would say more except that the last page prompts me to predict that Elena will have yet another reversal of fortune early in Volume 4 (which I will read). Lila does not know herself either, and her turning into a computer wizard after being a journeywoman sausage stuffer strains one's credulity.

Finally and unfortunately, like so many other characters in modern fiction and in life, the two are driven by needs for sex, money and social status, not by love. This work is less than the sum of its parts.

African Brush Fire Wars

Disclaimer: I am not a gamer and do not know anything about it. However, I am African military historian and will review the book from this perspective.

The coverage of the various conflicts is generally accurate and provides a good synopsis of the major operations or conflict. The sample organization are also historically correct for most of the know units, some of the terrorist organizations and a few of the units were done via educated guess. The various units covered include all the big players; Rhodesian SAS, Selous Scouts, Greys Scouts, Recce, Para Bats, Flechas, 32 Buffalo Battalion, RLI, and BSAP to name but a handful. As well all the major terrorist organizations are covered, with advisors and other outside supporters. The chapter on recent African conflicts covers operation Barras. Overall this is not an academic work nor is it meant to be. However a lot of effort went into this book to be as accurate as possible and I find that respectable.

Good, but perhaps rushed.

First, a little basic info on Force on Force and a foundation for my review: Force on Force is a very scenario oriented game. Due to the often one-sided nature of asymmetric engagements it is necessary to set up the scenario with equivalent asymmetric objectives and carefully balanced troop configurations. Finding the proper balance requires a lot of play-testing and fine tuning.

My main interest in this book is for the Rhodesian Bush Wars. The Rhodesian scenarios are quite interesting and provide quite a bit of diversity. Although there is a fairly large-scale Fireforce scenario, I would have liked to see a smaller scenario set up as sort of a quick to play option. The first (and only thus far) scenario I've played out of this expansion is "Down on the Farm". The background and general concept of the scenario is well thought out, however, the troop configuration seems to be very out of balance and resulted in some overly one-sided battles. It seems as though the expansion was sort of rushed to the printers before the all of the scenarios had enough play-testing time. Adding some additional (tested) scenarios would have been great as the book isn't extremely thick. It isn't a problem to tweak and add new scenarios on my own, but part of the reason for buying an expansion is for the authors to research and balance these types of things out.

As with other expansions and main rule book, the pictures and page layouts look very good. Although this may sound like kind of a tough review, I would buy it again knowing what I know now. It does look like the authors put a lot of work into pulling together the book and given some more time in development their great work could have been even better.

Betrayal, Death, Turning points, and a New Member

This storyline was the starting point of many changes in the Titans lives.
Wolfman and Perez brought us into the lives of the Titans and showed that they have more problems in their everyday lives than just defeating the bad guys.
Then the real plot comes in. I love the way they have it sneak up on you. They make Deathstroke what he is: The perfact assassin. The leaving of Wally West showed his low self-esteem. Dick quitting as Robin was a major decision that has affected the entire DC world.
The Titans at that time were a team proving their own value and they did it with this stroyline.
I'm not trying to go into too much detail without telling the story so I don't ruin it for new readers.
All Have to say about this book is that once you read it, you will be looking for more Titans books (Trust me, you will)

The High Point For Perez and Wolfman

Viewed by many as DC's X-Men, the New Teen Titans surpassed their Marvel rival and this book is the proof. Less wordy, better artwork and fuller plots and characters, Wolfman and Perez created something that has not only defined their careers, but has been a benchmark for all comic creators. The story is actually the culmination of 4 or 5 years of Teen Titan comics, starting with #1, but "The Judas Contract" is only the last year or so. Wolfman's writing appealed to his target reader, young adults, as their inner conflicts about fitting in, unrequited love or growing up was reflected in the heroes in the Titans. Looking back 20 years later, it may seem quaint, but it holds up, as does the main action and storyline. As for Perez's art, it is his finest. Not only is he able to create a different, unique look for each character, he was able to do it every month, plus provide inks for the first 3 chapters. It is true that the New Teen Titans never was as good a book afterwards, and near the end was embarrassing for all involved, but how many years did Claremont get out of the X-Men after John Byrne left? "The Judas Contract" ranks just below "Watchmen," "Dark Knight," and "Batman:Year One" as 1980s' DC product, and is still in the top 10 or 20 of all time.

A MUST READ CLASSIC

The Judas Contract is the pinnacle of the Wolfman-Perez era of the Titans, thats all there is to it. Action, adventure, betrayal, and tragedy are all enveloped within some of Perez's greatest work ever. I would recommend this not just to any Titans fan, but any comics fan at all, and you couldnt ask for a better introduction to the Titans if you've never been a fan. If you didnt like The Judas Contract, you just dont "get it" and never will. Its easily one of the Top 20, maybe Top 10 stories ever told. Forget Crisis, Identity Crisis, and Avengers Disassembled, if you want an "epic" story arc or an "event", this is it.

This is a new rendition from the Emile Zola Society edition of the novel. The reviewer below thinks this is Balzac. It's Zola of course and the Pastore edition is faithfully updated without it being absurdly modernist.Why audible.com says its "public domain" is anyone's guess. It is not. If you like your books read to you--and most readers do especially if they're in a car, this is terrific.

Dark and Intriguing

Very well written, and extremely dark.

In my quest to read classics this was on my list. I thought it was a great story told so well. However, it's a bit dark for my taste and not something I would have chosen.

The author wove an incredible tale and so many times I wanted to cry or slap someone.

I may not ever read it again, but I am glad I read it. I recommend you read it at least once.

Terrific!

Kate Winslet is a wonderful narrator, with her clear, soothing, and well-paced delivery, and her skilled character acting giving life and personalities to the pathetic characters of Zola's dark realist novel. The twisted plot revolves around human despair, lamentable desire, the rawness of passion, and the darkest strains of human psyche. While the theme and plot is simple and close, it is nonetheless compelling: Zola's language flows beautifully in Winslet's narration, and the dark psychology is not without its pessimistic depth. I wish Ms. Winslet could read all my books to me!
