Don't Overthink It

This book is a great read. Like this review, it is short, to the point, and explains the key concepts clearly. I for one appreciate brevity. I am a Java/web developer looking to bypass some of what I see as shortcomings of the current JavaScript language spec. I grabbed a 30-day trial copy of Webstorm, set it up for TypeScript (the integration is really good), and was able to see clearly - with the very simple examples the book provides - how TypeScript compiles to very readable JavaScript. Even if I do not end up using TypeScript, it has already taught me a few things I didn't know about JavaScript.

This probably isn't a good book for beginners. The concepts are presented assuming you already know JavaScript, object-oriented programming, etc. If, like me, you are someone who needs to develop in the JavaScript universe, but you are missing your static typing and object-oriented abstractions, TypeScript just might be your answer. And this book can get you productive quickly.

Short and sweet

TypeScript is Microsoft extension of Javascript. So you know 80% of TypeScript already, which is the Javascript part. TypeScript adds strong compile time typing of Javascript code, which lets you add Intellisense to your code, as well as catch dumb errors. Javascript without TypeScript is like C without lint.

This book takes you through each skill that you need to learn TypeScript step by step, so you can follow along and observe TypeScript in action.

This is a short book, easy to read and follow, and you will know 99% of Typescript when you finish it.

Soldier/Police officer whose been training off David Kahn's system for 4 years

I have served in the military for 16 years and law enforcement for eight. I have a background in martial arts and was a combatives instructor for two years. I personally witnessed standard training methods fail one of my buddies. He was taught to simply create distance and use firearms tactics. These methods didn't provide an adequate response in the heat of an edged weapon attack. Krav Maga is by far the best self-defense system due to its simplistic and practical nature. No other self-defense training is so effective and so simple at the same time. I have many times used elements from Krav Maga to fill gaps in the combatives curriculums I have had to instruct. When I first sought out Krav Maga training I found that there were many local places that seem to just teach ground and pound in there studio and call it Krav Maga. After researching the internet, I found that these local studios were far removed from the actual system itself. After seeking out the backstory on the system I found David's books and DVDs. Imi Lichtenfeld developed Krav Maga back in the 40s and passed the baton to Grandmaster Haim Gidon. Grandmaster Gidon is currently the highest ranking member of the IKMA. David Kahn was trained by Grandmaster Gidon. The curriculum taught in these books is straight from the source and untainted by pop culture. The great thing about these books and DVDs is that, with five books and four volumes of DVDs, there is way more than enough material to become an effective Kravist. With the right level of motivation and attention to detail you can be ready for any situation. I would recommend at least purchasing a gorilla pad, punching bag or finding a buddy to train with to make things easier. With that said, even without any equipment the techniques remain simple and effective. Your brain will retain what you practice by way of shadow boxing and visualization. The price of self-defense can be outrageous, and you rarely know what you've bought until you sign a contract. At $15 to $25 dollars a book you're not exactly throwing away money and you'll be totally satisfied. The best thing about it is you can train when you have time. You don't have to rush to get to class, or, even worse, sign a contract with some dojo you never have time to make it to. I don't make promises often, but, I promise if you buy the first book in the series you'll be stunned by the common sense approach to this system. Safe for me to say, before you know it you'll be buying everything David has to offer.

It works

I have studied various martial arts for years. I was fortunate enough to have had an instructor early on whose primary focus was practical self-defense, in other words, what would actually work in a street fight, mugging, ambush, etc. The techniques in this book are the same I have learned over the years. They are practical, and they work. The thing about this book I was happiest to see was the instructor's admission that: in a fight, you're going to get hit/hurt, possibly more than once, and that you must defend yourself to the best of your ability while striving to end the fight as quickly as you can with the appropriate amount of force (you're not going to immediately gouge the eyes out of some drunk who's a little overly friendly in a bar, but you may need to if he follows you out and tries to rape you). I also like the fact that he has included reality: it may take several blows from you before your attacker succumbs. Don't just hit a man once in the throat; hit him as many times as you safely can. Overall a good read, and if you can remember and apply these techniques in a crisis situation you're ahead of the game, but it still doesn't take the place of taking a class in a martial art and feeling what it's like, under controlled conditions, to actually block someone's strike, grapple with them, punch back, etc. But remember and apply these techniques if necessary, and this book very well could save your life.

I work as an account manager in the Life Sciences vertical of an ITES organisation. I have been in the system for quite some time and had gained understanding of some of the key Pharmaceutical business fucntion.

This book particularly helped me to understand the full landscape and gain overall perpective. I would recommend this to anyone who has some or no business function knowledge and is wanting to consolidate. I would also recommend you to note down the points that are of interest to you and weave them in your own Pharma story.

I have now picked up Manual of Drug Safety And Pharmacovigilance. I am hoping this book would be as interesting as the earlier one.

I have a chem/biochem background and am about to finish my PhD. This book was great help for preparing for interviews in the pharmaceutical industry. Especially if you do not know anything about drug development, clinical trials and GxP regulations it is worth the money!

He had been appointed the Cazique of Poyais, and bestowed with many honours by the local king of this unspoiled paradise. Dry and boring writing style

The book looked promising... I wished I hadn't bought it. The writing style is dry and a bit boring. If you can get into this place by special appointment you can see this thing. Some passages drone on with the authors opinions: "By prior appointment... you can visit the Pinacoteca Manfrediana... Unfortunately, a large number of the paintings are of little interest..." Secret Venice is just not written in an engaging manner, more like listening to a pompous acquaintance bestow his "pearls of wisdom" upon you.

Dr. Victor David is a Professor and Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Bucharest, Romania. He is the author of more than 120 publications, including 92 scientific papers in ISI international journals and 10 books and chapters in various Encyclopedias. First in a trilogy. Exciting YA novel.

Five teenagers with nothing in common share a school detention. They are different ages, sexes, colour and from very different backgrounds. They don't even like each other very much. Under normal circumstances there would be no social interaction between these five, despite attending the same school. But unbeknown to them they each share something exceptional and an electrical storm during their detention ignites what in each of them makes them special.
As they come to terms with their own uniqueness and learn to control their powers they must also accept each others differences and work as a team.
An excellent "awakening" novel. The author has set a strong foundation for the trilogy.
Interesting idea, likeable characters and a fast exciting plot all make this a good YA novel.

CIRCLE OF FIVE tells the story of five young people who are gifted with special powers linked to a mysterious community. They are put through their training by their teacher, Mr. Harris and told to tell no one the truth about their powers. The book follows them as they start to learn more and control what they are able to do. They are all interlinked with each other and it explores a lot of the connection between the five. It's well written, engaging, exciting and a page turner. I highly recommend it to those who like YA paranormal fiction and look forward to the next book in the trilogy.

A Believable Plot

Five students are sent to detention for various reasons. When an electric storm erupts there is a disturbance but they wake the next day with very little remembrance of it but a shared confused. That's not all they share now. What really happened is that Ryan, Cassie, Sam, Sebastian, and Maya are infused with special power.

I don't want to spill any spoilers but i do want to emphasize that the author very skillfully transitions the plot from the "every day" high school drama played between these five to an "out-of-this-world" story-line that will keep the reader turning pages.

There are two teachers at the school who noticed the change in these students. One of them, Mr. Harris, helps the five get control of their very special new powers. I won't comment on the other teacher, I'm not giving anything away.

The story centers on the five students, their relationship between each other and their growing understanding of a much bigger world than their small town school. There is nothing unusual about their school and their society, with drugs and booze available they must scale their desire to be like everyone else because their destiny is larger than what they see. Despite their differences and their "normal" dramas about class schedules and girlfriends and boyfriends, they must learn to get along and to help each other out, especially when one of them goes missing.

I will let others know about this book. It was a pleasure to read.
