About the Author
Jean McNiff is Professor of Educational Research at York St John University, UK. She is also a Visiting Professor at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, and at the Beijing Normal University and Ningxia Teachers’ University, People’s Republic of China.
Jean took early retirement from her position as deputy head teacher of a large secondary school in Dorset, UK. She went into business for herself, and developed her writing. Her textbooks on action research and professional education are now used internationally on workplace-based professional education courses and on higher degree courses. Jean provides interdisciplinary consultancy work to institutions around the world where she gives lectures and conducts workshops on planning, doing and writing action research.
Jean aims to contribute to personal and social betterment through educational research. She encourages everyone to make their stories public in the form of their personal and collaborative theories of practice; and she firmly believes that each individual is able to contribute to social and planetary wellbeing by explaining how they hold themselves accountable for what they do. In this way she links education with moral accountability. She tries to bring the university to everyday contexts, and everyday contexts into the university, for it is only by involving everyone, she feels, that the world will become a better place for us all.

Beware of Kindle edition!

Be aware that the Kindle edition is not the latest edition. And the Kindle edition does not include page numbers for reference. Therefore, I would highly discourage purchasing the Kindle edition as a textbook - which I'm learning the hard way.
Besides that, I find the information in the book valuable, but it takes me a lot of wading through quite repetitive wording between the more useful information. I think this book could be half as long and still contain the same amount of information useful to undertaking an action research project.

Excellent Action Research Text

As a graduate student, I have read several texts in an effort to learn about action research methodology. By far, this book is the best one I have read. It's detailed explanation of the action research process and use of illustrative case studies makes for an easy-to-understand guidebook for any practitioner interested in developing his or her own action research project.

Brilliant

This is far my favourite book on action research. It is written in a simple straight-forward manner, it focuses on how the researcher is part of a political agenda, and it explains how to structure an action research paper or thesis in a similar way to how one would structure another piece of empirical research. Having said this, it is not at easy text to understand on a deep level. The key chapter that defines the nature of the whole book is chapter 8 on the politics of knowledge. Without understanding or agreeing with the ideology expressed here, I think the whole book will fall apart like a house of cards. Nevertheless, the idea of the politics of knowledge aligns with Frankfurt critical theory and the discourse about oppression and freedom is probably so central to anybody considering doing action research, so it may not be a problem. What is more challenging, perhaps, is the way McNiff and Whitehead talk about practitioner theory and practition thinking as more or less the same thing. But this is a completely different issue having to do with the philosophy of science. Personally, I would feel more comfortable if the authors had aligned themselves with somebody like Bas van Fraassen to make the philosophy of science in use both practical and scientific, but this is a problem with most texts about action research I have seen, and the philosophy in this book is probably closer to conventional science than in most books, so this is my favourite.
