About the Author
Judith Lorber is Professor Emerita of Sociology and Women's Studies at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. She is the author of Breaking the Bowls: Degendering and Feminist Change (2005), Paradoxes of Gender (1994), numerous articles on gender and on women in healthcare, and coauthor of Gendered Bodies: Feminist Perspectives (OUP, 2006) and Gender and the Social Construction of Illness (2002).

This was one of the books I had to buy for my introductory Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies class. I like the overview on the first page, but I wish the expository sections and the primary source sections were separated rather than integrated. Content wise, it's awesome and I learned a lot.

It's a good introduction into different feminist branches of thought

It's a good introduction into different feminist branches of thought. However, not all the chosen short readings seemed like they best illustrated different branches of feminism. My main complaint, however, comes from the transphobic language used by the author, such as describing trans-identified people as "gender benders" and other inaccurate and inappropriate descriptions. The author clearly is not well versed in trans issues and didn't feel she needed to be to write about them.
