Here he considers the parts that make up the city through time--walls, urban divisions, public places, the street, and the urban process. The book is wide-ranging in time and space and presents the fruits of a lifetime of looking, but it is fragmented, appearing to be almost an assembly of notes for a more considered work or for The City Shaped. Still, the author is an astute observer, and his remarks are frequently illuminating for specialists and novices alike. This survey of the microparts of cities will be of interest primarily to professionals and historians but also to urban inhabitants, the same audience addressed by William Whyte ( City: Rediscovering Its Center , LJ 2/1/89).

When I ordered this book I'd already knew that it's good, but it surprised me! It is different of the other books about urbanism history. Kostof have always a special point of view in his works. Here he shows the history of the city from a different angle, someway from the inside to outside. It don't analise the city from its form (from the outside), but from the elements that fills it. The street, the public space and other city elements tells about the city more than you think, because it is a mirror of the city and citizen culture. This book give to you a new point of view of the city. A must have to any architect and entusiast.

Virtual Machines offers a unique insight into the building of virtual machines for sequential, object-oriented and parallel languages, and uses comparisons of different VMs to provide actual, practical examples on how to build VMs.

State transitions are used as a formal technique for the specification of virtual machines throughout and - in addition – transitions and state transitions relating to the general operation are included for specification of the virtual machine for the event-based system. Two virtual machines are defined using a simple sequential language, which is then generalised to include object and parallelism. Other themes explored include the implementation of VMs and proposals for future work. Appendices contain high-level specifications of two compilers: one for the simple language that serves as the basic example throughout the book, the other for the event-based language specified in Chapter 6.

This book is an essential reference tool for academic and industrial researchers as well as postgraduates in this area.

The copyeditor was asleep on the job

When I first received my copy of "Virtual Machines" and opened it up to the preface, the first thing I felt was rage. There is a grammatical error in the very first sentence! [Edit: It turns out that the supposed grammatical error was simply a British vs. American English difference, one which I've encountered numerous times since reading this book. Mea culpa.] I closed the book and shelved it for over six months. This is an expensive, thin book, and I am simply not interested in paying a premium for low volume technical books if the publisher does nothing more than print camera-ready copy and mark up the result 1000%.

That rant aside, I find Craig's book to be pretty decent. The technical content of the book is sound, and the depth is appropriate for an audience that is interested in writing basic virtual machines. I also have a copy of Virtual Machines: Versatile Platforms for Systems and Processes (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design), and I find that the two books complement each other rather nicely.

The dictionary still defines nymphomania as "excessive sexual desire in a female," yet, as Groneman shows, the condition may not even exist. Nymphomania, she argues, is a metaphor reflecting society's ambivalence toward and discomfort with female desire. Victorians considered nymphomania an organic disease. In the early 20th century, psychoanalytic theory associated nymphomania with frigidity, penis envy, lesbianism and prostitutionAall thought to stem from a woman's "immature" inability to enjoy vaginal orgasms. By the mid-20th century, scientific evidence of female sexual response led to even more confused theories of nymphomania, as "sexperts" sought to reconcile evidence of multiple orgasms and easy arousal with notions of morality. Groneman, a professor of history and co-editor of To Toil the Livelong Day: America's Women at Work, 1780-1980, sketches the historical and social contexts in which nymphomania was considered, and enlivens her text with numerous medical and legal case histories. She exposes the historical association of nymphomania with "lower" classes and new immigrants, and documents the disturbing tendency to blame rape and incest on the alleged provocation of the victim. Groneman concludes, "[E]ven though the sexual revolution appears to have changed the double standard about who gets to enjoy sex or how much sex is 'normal,' a deep ambivalence still exists... toward female sexuality." Groneman explored the annals of American medicine, law, and popular culture to trace the evolution of nymphomania, a term so prone to fluctuating definitions that it resides, she observes, strictly "in the eye of the beholder." Generally understood as a pathological degree of female sexual desire, nymphomania was once considered so dire that doctors removed the ovaries and clitoris of healthy patients in pursuit of a socially acceptable female sexuality, one that is unthreatening to men and with motherhood as its goal. Using case studies as her stepping stones, Groneman presents one disturbing disclosure after another as she moves from the homebound Victorian era into the complexities of twentieth-century womanhood, and deftly analyzes the madonna-whore syndrome, the biases of male sex experts, and all the harm done by Freud's misconceptions about women's orgasms. As Groneman drives home her point that interpretations of nymphomania are closely tied to advances in medicine and human rights, she provides dramatic examples to support her argument that in spite of improvements, fear and confusion regarding women's sexuality are still rampant and destructive. Excellent History Of Nymphomania Since The 19th Century

Groneman's book is an insightful look at Western, primarily American, cultural attitudes towards female sexuality from the 19th century to the present, with emphasis on the so-called "disease" of nymphomania. She begins in the mid-1800's, offering cases studies of young girls and housewives. These women, either voluntarily or through family pressure, sought out medical treatement to cure their high sex drive. Many doctors of this era viewed nymphomania as a physical malady. So they attempted to "cure" these women through weird and disgusting procedures such as having leeches suck blood from the vagina. Other doctors tried even more extreme surgeries, such as clitorectomies or removal of the ovaries.

By the 20th century American ideas about female sexuality had become slightly more progressive. Now women were expected to have healthy and happy sexual relations. But, of course, only within the confines of heterosexual marriage. However, largely influenced by the theories of supposed sex experts such as Freud, it was now believed that women should experience orgasms only through vaginal intercourse and that women who needed clitoral stimulation were either frigid or psychologically maladjusted. Of course, women who were lesbians, prostitutes or sought to have sex outside of marriage were still considered nymphomaniacs and in need of treatment.

The 1920s was a decade of modernization, with many women seeking greater equal rights and becoming more comfortable with their own sexuality. This progress continued in the 1960's and 1970's with the availability of the birth control pill and the resurgent feminist movement. Today young women are certainly more upfront about their sexual feelings compared to 100 years ago. But still a double standard remains with sexually promiscuous men considered to be "studs" while females who are equally sexually active are often called "sluts". Obviously, this needs to change.

I believe we should strive towards a sexually open and honest society where both women and men are able to be as sexually active, or inactive, as they wish to be without any social stigma attached. Of course, America rose up from Puritan roots and is still probably the most sexually repressed and immature of all the modern Western nations. Hopefully we will eventually grow beyond this childish and unhealthy attitude towards sex and especially women's sexuality.

Why is America so afraid of sexuality?

A fascinating history of a pseudo-medical term used to mark overly sexual women as abnormal, diseased or deviant. The author is professor of history at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

She examines the evolution of this term from the mid-nineteenth century to the present ( The book was published in 2000 ) and discusses the medical and legal issues surrounding the term and the women diagnosed with it.

Male nymphomaniacs ( having a condition called satyriasis or Don Juanism) are treated briefly mainly because it was not given a lot of attention until recently because males are expected to be promiscuous and highly sexed. The more recent term, sex-addiction, is applied to males and females. Ironically, males are now diagnosed with it more than women. An interesting historical flip-flop.

Although the term has taken on either a joking or positive connotation in the 21st century, even in our so-called 'enlightened' age, the negative effects of the term linger on. There is still a double standard concerning women who want more sex than their partners or want to engage in sex outside of a 'monogamous committed relationship.' Women are still punished if they 'disobey' their 'natural' inclination toward a stifled libido. All the bull-crap spewed out by popular science books on evolutionary psychology has only served to reinforce this double standard ( see Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationshipsfor a rebuttal of this. ).

If you are interested in this subject, it is worth a read.

It is well to remember that there are still places in the United States where it is illegal to sell sex toys. Does Nymphomania Really Exist?

The existence of nymphomania is the question that the author tries to answer by studying the history of the " disease" from the 1700s until the current day. The author has examined medical records as well as common literature to determine what was considered to be nymphomania during each period in history. She examines nymphomania when it was considered to be an organic disease, through the sexual revolution when it was believed to be a psychological issue into the current day where it is considered to be a moral issue. What defines nymphomania is the continually shifting line that makes it difficult to determine whether the disease even exists. Although most males would love to believe that the disease exists, at this time it is questionable whether women who desire a lot of sex are any different from males in a similar position. As the author points out, there is a category of "disease" for males called satyriasis, however males are rarely diagnosed with it. The gender gap that exists is amazing.

I would highly recommend reading this book. It is a fascinating look at that history of sex in the United States, and around the world from the 1700s until the present. It is also an incredible study into the sociology and psychology of sex for the same period of time. Overall, this is a well-written book which contains a wealth of fascinating information.

Venerable pediatrician Brazelton (Touchpoints) teams up with child psychologist Joshua D. Sparrow to adapt his theory of "touchpoints" to children ages three to six. In his earlier work, Brazelton explained that infants undergo periods of behavioral regression (touchpoints) before each developmental burst. Here he addresses issues like sibling rivalry, bedwetting, tantrums and lying as normal aspects of development, and suggests ways parents can be emotionally supportive. The first of the book's two major sections follows four imaginary children with varying, composite temperaments (an active boy, a quiet boy, an intense girl and a cheerful girl), exploring everything from adjusting to a new sibling to making friends. Readers may soon find themselves skipping all but the portions directly related to their own child's temperament type (and weeding out the fictional scenes to get to the nitty-gritty of what to do when a child lies, wets the bed, etc.). In the second section, the authors straightforwardly discuss various contemporary parenting concerns, such as the pros and cons of computers and dealing with divorce. Throughout, Brazelton and Sparrow maintain a characteristically comforting tone, reminding parents that it's best to accept a child's temperament while helping her adapt to the world. Brazelton's latest work sets out to do for preschoolers and early elementary age students what his prior works did for infants and toddlers. The premise of his "Touchpoints" series is that each new stage of development also has a corresponding regression in behavior. Brazelton and child psychologist Sparrow address these "potentially vulnerable periods" by providing parents and caregivers with tools to help children help themselves. The book asserts that adults can help children use frustration as a learning tool by comforting them, then having them take responsibility. In addition to sample situations and suggestions for how parents can help children at each age level from three to six years, the book also provides a "Facing Challenges as a Family" section, which addresses such diverse topics as asthma, adoption, computer usage, and safety. This comprehensive work will expand libraries' resources for caregivers of this age group beyond the works of Lois Ames and should sit alongside Brazelton's earlier works on library shelves. Destined to become required reading for parents and early childhood educators, this is a valuable addition to any public library; also recommended for academic libraries with a focus on child development. Unlock the Mysteries of Childhood

I read Brazelton forty years ago when my first baby was born. It was very helpful when trying to navigate the rough storms of child-rearing. Now I have grandchildren. My first was a dream. She was always agreeable and never fussy. Then, as she approached three and a new baby was on the way, she started to cling to mommy and became upset at a moment's notice. Going to bed became difficult. So I ordered the Brazelton books for me and her parents. Immediately I remembered some things I knew before and picked up some pointers I had never known. This book is easy to understand and soooooo helpful.

Sincere Recommendation: Get *both* Touchpoints volumes as a shower gift. (explanation below)

Concise, readable, sensitive, relevant, useful, effective, calming + confidence-building to the parent, and more.
Our pediatrician recommended his Touchpoints, and neither I nor my wife have had any regrets with either volume.
In fact, if I had to buy only 1 parenting advice book, I'd buy Brazelton. (tho considering his Touchpoints-Birth to Three & TP:3-6 as a 2-volume set of "1 book!")

With this volume, the biggest "downcheck" lies with the parents:
For the TP:B-3 book, most parents are still in their "check the manual" phase. By the time parents get to Brazelton's TP:3-6 volume, the training wheels have come off, parents are in cruise-control, and all the parenting books are collecting dust with the flotsam and jetsam of early childhood.*
... until night terrors or some other unexpected adventure bursts into the scene!!

At that point, it's so beneficial for parents to recall that they have a reserve battery of TBB's advice waiting for them on their shelf.

* Please excuse my mixing 3 metaphors in 1 sentence!

lacking in style but not substance

Dr. Brazelton seems to be a gentle and loving advocate for children, and a doctor who understands them! I've read other books by him and enjoyed them very much, and been comforted by them, and was looking forward to this addition to his work. Unfortunately I agree with most of the other comments made here, that the format makes it much more difficult to find specific information. Because the authors use four composite children to describe many events and behaviors, it makes it difficult to tease out what is relevant. Our toddler is very similar in temperament to "Billy", but Billy supposedly grew up with an abusive father for a while and his mother has remarried -- nothing like our child's experience -- so what becomes irrelevant in the text and what can we still use? Largely told as lengthy narratives, it takes a long time to find useful ideas, but there is a good index that helps.

Despite the poor format, the ideas here are solid and helpful. Brazelton and Sparrow posit that as children reach milestones of development they backslide in other areas -- a usually peaceful child suddenly indulging in temper tantrums as they begin to conquer speech, for example.

We've found Brazelton's ideas helpful and spot-on, and there are unique events in this age range that make the book useful, though the clunky format keeps it from being invaluable.

THEY HAD TALKED about marrying a white man, but Amra never thought they were serious, not even when fed up with the proposal-slinging aunties who showed up at weddings and holiday celebrations with wallet-sized photos of eligible doctors and engineers, their particulars scribbled on the back (5'11", MIT, owns home or Stanford Medical, 33, professional wife okay). It was simply a way to vent. Because sometimes she and her friends needed to say something after the Ramadan parties and family celebrations, where the men always ate first and never helped clean up. It was just a bluff, the threat to marry outside of their culture, or so Amra thought until the Friday after Valentine’s Day, when Rukan rushed into Khao Sarn twenty minutes late—Amra and Zainab had already finished their miang kum and were attacking the fried tofu—and, without taking off her coat, flashed an enormous diamond ring.
Amra didn’t know what to say. All she could think of was the Home Shopping Network and a laboratory. Which, unfortunately, opened the floor for Zainab.
“What the hell is that?”
“Nice, Zainab,” Amra said. “What would her father say if he could hear you?” Rukan’s father did not tolerate women who swore. When they befriended her that first earnest year at Smith, despite Zainab’s prodding, Rukan couldn’t even say “crap” until the second semester.
Zainab nodded, like she was glad Amra had asked. “I think he would say, ‘What is that ring doing on my daughter’s finger and it better not have come from that goddamned kafir.”
“Adam isn’t a kafir,” Rukan said. “He’s an Episcopalian.”
Zainab rolled her eyes.
“It counts,” Rukan insisted. “You know, People of the Book? Christians and Jews. And Sabians.” Rukan frowned. “What even is a Sabian?” Amra shrugged. Zainab shot Rukan a look suggesting it couldn’t possibly matter, at that moment, what a Sabian was.
“Rook, even if it counts,” Zainab said, “it doesn’t help you. In your father’s world, Muslim men can marry Christians and Jews. Not Muslim women.”
“Some scholars say that women can, too.”
“Name one.”
Rukan sighed and turned to Amra. “How bad do you think it will be?”
“With your parents?” Rukan nodded. Amra searched for the right words. “I think they’ll be caught off guard.”
Zainab laughed. “Really, Amra? You think?”
Rukan slumped in her chair. “Well, they’ll just have to deal with it. I’m getting married.”
“To Adam,” Amra said.
“Yes, to Adam. Should I agree to some arranged marriage instead? To some guy who’s only after my father’s money?”
“Of course not.” It was a false dilemma, Amra knew, the idea that those were Rukan’s only choices. “It’s just so�… sudden.”
“Please. You go to weddings all the time where the bride and groom have spent all of three hours together.” Rukan took off her coat, finally, and pushed it over the back of her chair. She seemed to notice the food for the first time and spooned some Chinese broccoli onto her plate. “It’s been almost three months,” she said. “That’s practically a lifetime in our community.”
Amra didn’t disagree. But Adam was not from their community. “I’m sorry,” Amra said. “You’re right. Three months is more than enough time to fall in love.” Rukan nodded and took a sip of her water, staring at the wall on the other side of the restaurant.
“So,” Zainab said, “when do we get to meet the kafir?”

Amra didn’t check her voice mail until she was back in her office. Her mother had called twice and sent one text during lunch: Salaam, Beti. Where are you? Please call, ASAP. Amra had discreetly texted back, asking if it was an emergency, while Rukan talked about reception venues and tiered cakes. It is not emergent, her mother replied, but urgent.
She smiled at her mother’s precise response. Growing up with her mother, an English professor at NYU, meant not being allowed to say “snuck” instead of “sneaked” or “ironic” to refer to a coincidence. It did, however, mean scoring a perfect 800 on the verbal SAT.
Amra closed her office door and dialed. Her mother picked up on the first ring, and Amra could picture her in her study, her hair pulled into a loose bun, her black reading glasses perched on the end of her nose, making comments in careful, slanted script on her students’ papers. The entire wall behind her mother’s desk was covered with a sea of books arranged by subject—gender studies, politics, linguistics. On the antique end table near the door, she displayed a signed first-edition copy of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own in the original cinnamon cloth. The wood floor of her mother’s office was covered with a maroon Tabriz rug, on which Amra played as a child while her mother graded papers and prepared her lecture notes. It was where she learned that women’s work mattered, that a mother was also someone who did interesting and important things outside of the home. Amra grew up wanting to be just like her and had tried to forge a similar space in the spare bedroom of her Back Bay condo. Somehow, it fell short.
“Beti,” her mother said, “what are you doing the weekend of March tenth?”
Amra didn’t need to check. “Working.”
“I knew you were going to say that. I have a better idea. Why don’t you come home for a couple of days? Let me pamper you. All those long hours. You need a break.”
“I can’t. I have two deals closing that week and Eric is going on vacation.”
“Eric,” her mother scoffed. “The man who cannot bother to learn your name after four years?” It was true. Eric still mispronounced her name, rhyming the first syllable with “Sam” instead of “sum,” giving it an odd, southern twang even though Eric was from Scarsdale. “It’s pronounced Umruh,” she’d tried to explain during those first grueling weeks and then given up.
“If that man can go away for seven days,” her mother continued, “surely my overworked daughter can take one weekend off.” Amra looked at her desk—the neat piles of manila folders, the stacks of merger and acquisition documents, the pink message slips her secretary placed in the tray as Amra had instructed (urgent ones on the left and in descending order of importance)—and wished it worked that way. Amra wasn’t up for partner for two years, and until then she was yoked to Eric’s slightest whim. But Amra knew such explanations would only upset her mother further.
“Maybe I’ll come over the Easter holiday,” she said. “Things should settle down by then.”
“Easter? Amra, I need you here on the tenth.” Her mother’s tone became less conversational and more infused with purpose.
“Why?”
“The Syeds will be in town.”
“Which Syeds?” Amra knew about fifty Syeds.
“Don’t you remember? From our first apartment on Ninety-first Street. Dr. Syed and his family. You used to play with their daughter, Maha.”
Amra remembered. Who could forget Maha with her little notepads, watching the other children, scribbling furtive notes. Once at a wedding, Zainab grabbed Maha’s yellow tablet, stood on a chair, and read its contents. It turned out to be a list of various children’s names and a chronicle of their indiscretions. Maha had cited one boy for staring at a girl, Zainab for swearing, and Amra for “acting like she is better than everyone on the planet.” “You’re recording our sins?” Zainab had asked incredulously. Maha just shrugged and said the angels were doing it anyway. It was at Maha’s house, years later, that Amra got her first period and the ever-prepared Zainab led her to the bathroom for a crash course in tampon wearing. Maha caught sight of the white tube and told her father that the girls were smoking. Because of Maha, Amra had to endure Dr. Syed banging on the bathroom door while Zainab held it shut long enough for her to get her pants up. Amra had been mortified, but Zainab simply deposited the cardboard applicator in Dr. Syed’s hand as they passed him and said, “I think this is what you’re looking for.” The only good part about Maha was her brother Mateen, with his Shahid Kapoor good looks, but he was several years older than the girls and never paid them any attention.
Amra sighed. “I doubt that Maha cares much about seeing me.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” her mother said. “She worshipped the ground you and Zainab walked on.”
“She had a funny way of showing it.”
“Yes, well, children can be funny. Shall I make your shuttle reservation or will your secretary take care of it?”

I read it to get another view of life from another culture and it was good in that sense

I ordered this book on my Kindle and I wish there had been a page explaining all the ethnic terms used in the book. I read it to get another view of life from another culture and it was good in that sense. I found myself really interested in what happened to the characters in the book and anxious to see how everything turned out.

I highly recommend this book

I have hoped Aleya would write a book about her work for many years now. I have really been able to grow with her daily cups meditations. This book is life changing for me. I have never been one to read a lot of new age books as so many are fluffy or too hard to understand. I highly recommend this book. I have not been able to put it down since I got it and I am already able to use the tools she gives to improve my life.

Very easy to read and life changing!

I was reading and was so moved, tears were in my eyes. Before I had bought my copy and for sure before I held it in my hands to read it (because I read the free section via kindle) I had the thought of,"I have known Aleya for over 10 years, worked with her nearly as long, have been listening to the daily cups for almost 5 years, is this book going to be that effective?"
YES! I am getting energy whacks! It is one thing listening and repeating along to her daily cups of consciousness, it is quite another to have the words in front of me so that I can SEE and SAY them.
Oh, Aleya, my Dear, I am so grateful. Thank you so much.
Once I finished writing this all out I was balling.
It is good! My tears, my joy, this life, your book!

Our Path to Joy!

I love, love, love this book! It has changed my life! That may sound a little dramatic, but Aleya explains how to live your authentic life; how to be true to yourself and allow others to do the same. We are not alone. We have spiritual beings to help us along the path of life. Aleya talks about how our Higher Self is the go to being to ask for what we need and how to fulfill our desires. Aleya writes with such ease and fluidity that for sure you think she is talking just to you! You can relate to all of her stories because we all have similar ones. And Aleya's lessons are easy to follow. 7 Cups of Consciousness is a hard book to put down!
