You could not tell I have been through times where every moment felt like a battlefield, heck was a battlefield or maybe a babble-filled with arguments strewn all over and a life that made about as much sense and was as coherent as a land fill site or a toxic waste dump. There is no way to tell that I have walked through frustration littered days with minefields of argument and breathed anger and angst filled air day after day.

But I have. That has been my life. It may be yours. It is probable that whatever situation you may be faced with right now, the likelihood of it having been as messed up, as fragmented, as frustrating, as outright demented and up chuck inducing as my reality the past eight years or so, is highly unlikely. Not impossible, of course, for clearly there exist situations that are messier and more frustrating and more perverted in circumstance than my own, but unlikely. I say that not to be dramatic but simply because it is true. The likelihood of a repeat of the circumstances I have been facing and have faced, in any life, is extremely small.

For I have lived with, loved, been married to, a narcissist, for eight years. It took me a while to figure it out, but I have learned that there are some simple ways of handling things, some simple strategies, techniques, and methods that will allow you to keep your sanity and move forward with your life and goals in a loving and happy manner, even though you may be stuck in a very difficult relationship with a person who has narcissistic personality disorder: with a narcissist.

This is a simple, straightforward, book that just tells you what you need to know about narcissism; how to deal with it in a manner that will keep you healthy, loving and strong; able to make the relationship decisions you need to make to have a fulfilling and love filled, happy life. This is a road map through the challenges that will be helpful to anybody who has ever had to deal with a self-involved or narcissistic individual on any level.

Thorough, helpful, and knowledgeable book

When I first bought this book I had the idea that it would give me some insight into NPD or narcissist personality disorder. It did that, but it also did much more. The writer speaks from the point of view of having survived a relationship with a person who has NPD, and, though he does not state as much, it seems that it may have been written just after the relationship ended in divorce. I say this because divorce is mentioned very early on in the book. This gives the book a sense of urgency and an authenticity which only adds value to the very recently gained insights it contains.

It is set up and organized as an action plan to take the reader through getting past the challenges in their relationship in a step by step manner. This is very useful for those in a challenging relationship as the writer is using his own proven effective step by step system to deal with a very personal and difficult challenge. This book would be a terrific and valuable read not only for those dealing with a self absorbed partner, but also for anybody looking at how to be more effective in working with those who seem to lack empathy or are overly concerned with themselves.

Reading this book made me realize and better understand that this type of difficulty, that of being overly self-absorbed, is often something that the person in question cannot really control and that it 'gets away from them', in a manner of of speaking. I now can think more open mindedly and fairly about the challenges faced by those afflicted with NPD, and realize this is a far more common disorder than I had originally thought.

The only real weakness is the lack of clinical data, and medical research, but since these are available readily on the Internet or from other written sources this is not critical.

This is a very valuable book that achieves its purpose of showing a positive and creative process for resolving what can be a very sticky and difficult relationship situation. I would highly recommend it to anybody facing the challenge of being with a narcissist, or anybody who has a friend in a like situation. It is also quite helpful in learning about the topic.

Love is a battlefield, but you can win the war with the narcissist in your life.

I can tell that this book was written by a psychologist as opposed to the usual "you're OK, I'm OK, we're all OK" quacks one often sees. Narcissists are quite challenging because on one hand they have an inflated sense of self-worth and on the other hand, they can be very needy and very dependent on praise and affection, even when they don't deserve it. This book won't cure their narcissism but it might help your partner be more aware of the things he or she does, and it will give you strategies when it comes to fighting his tricks. For example, instead of getting mad and going in circles, you might respond an accusation like "yeah, I'm guilty of everything" with "is it possible you are trying to make me feel guilty hoping that we can maybe do it the way you want." Because as the author says, the narcissist is incapable of taking the long view and seeing the consequences because his view is myopic. Therefore, it is your duty to help him or her see things for what they are and not for what he thinks they should be. You will learn to respond instead of reacting, to take time off for yourself, and to save a relationship that chances are is worth saving. In fact, if you think dating a narcissist is bad, try dating one of those insecure Debbie downers that always feels bad, always feels depressed, rarely feels happy even when good things happen to her. In fact, maybe our attraction to narcissists comes from their initial self-confidence, even if it's a mask for other feelings, it can be a very convincing mask at times. Overall, I like the common-sense and easy to understand advice in this book. Oh, and for those who say "why can't I date someone normal," I have news for you, normal does not exist.

Very Helpful

I'll be honest, I did not understand narcissism before reading this book. I just thought it was an easy cop-out to be a selfish, self-absorbed individual.

Dr. Goodman opened my eyes. In this easy to read, no doctor talk book, Dr. Goodman covered the basics and then some. Speaking from personal experience Dr. Goodman knows first hand about dealing with a narcissistic loved one. I applaud Dr. Goodman for speaking out and helping others in a similar situation.

A very thorough book that easily explains narcissism and how to survive - or as you'll soon realize, not survive but really love and enjoy life.

Loving a narcissist is difficult, whether it's a spouse, a parent a child, or a friend, this book is filled with practical solutions and tips for helping you not just deal with a bad situation, but with advice on how to really make the most out of life.

If you are an MS-III studying for the surgery shelf I cannot recommend this book enough. I, like most, had heard of the 70 page Pestana pdf floating around and used that for the first 5 weeks of my rotation. Had I known sooner about this expanded version I would have made the switch ages ago. It is a very easy read written in a similar tone Dr. Pestana's surgery review. He distills only high-yield facts and adds many clinical pearls. Surgical Recall is an excellent resource for on the wards and OR pimping but this text is invaluable because it cuts through the additional low-yield nonsense that Lawrence provides and gives you what you need for the test. Many times during the shelf I wanted to mentally caress Dr. Pestana's insane eyesbrows as the questions seemed as if they had been taken right out of the book. The surgical clerkship can be a hectic time with a seemingly endless time crunch but with this resource you should be more than ready to ace the shelf.

Carlos�Pestana, MD, PhD, is emeritus professor of surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Ranked #1 in his medical school class, Dr. Pestana has a doctorate in surgery from the University of Minnesota and did a 5-year surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic.�He�has received over 40 teaching awards and prizes for teaching excellence.�In the early 1990s he was a�member of the Comprehensive Part II Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners that designed what is now the clinical component of the USMLE Step 2 exam.�Dr.�Pestana�is also the author of Fluids and Electrolytes in the Surgical Patient, which has been translated into Spanish, Italian, and Greek.

Only used this book

I decided to be the guinea pig and rely solely on this book and UW questions (on surgery only). In other words, because I was so busy and exhausted from my surgery rotation, I did not use FA, NMS, CF or any other book. It was almost 8 months since I had IM and did not do great on that shelf. I read this book 4x and made sure I could squeeze out as much info as I could from it. I ended up getting 80% on the shelf. If you have more time, get this book and learn it well but supplement high yield parts that you are weak in with more sources. If you feel like you have no time or energy left to study after your 16 hour surgery days, using this book alone (and doing UW questions) will 100% guarantee that you pass and possibly honor the shelf.

It's a quick read for downtime during your surgery rotation, but my attending asked questions far beyond the basic "high yield" facts in this book. It's a good quick review or even a pre-read, but not complete on its own.

A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.

Jan Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folktales, fairy tales, and poems, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear. What Might Fitten into a Knitten Mitten? A tale of snowy enchantment!

A boy of about 7 or 8 wants warm winter mittens, in white. His grandmother advises as color so the mittens can be found if dropped. But Nikki wants and gets white. Off he goes into the deep snows around the small farmstead---and drops a mitten while climbing a tree. Not noticing, on he goes having a wonderful snowy day. So does a wee mole who crawls in the mitten. So does a rabbit snuggling right down. So do a forestful of animals, all enchantingly portrayed with expressions of increasing annoyance as a ox---a fox and then a great big bear climb into the sot warm mitten.

But---a tiny mouse, a latecomer, climbs on bear's nose causing a big sneeze which propels all the critters hither and yon, and tosses the mitten through the air just in time for Nikki who is searching to catch it. On the last page, Nikki is happily toasting his toes by the fire while Grandma holds up the mittens she has knitted puzzled indeed about why has stretched and stretched.

The story abounds with delights for reader and listeners: the text is written with almost a poetic cadence with lovely sounding words; the illustrations are bright with color and joyously composed, the story tickles the imaginations and offers a grand platform for talking about animals who might or might not fitten into a mitten. For my family, this was a perfect Christmas-tide story even here on a tropical island .

This is a classic childrens' story that has been rewritten by Jan Brett with her own ability to draw animals in nature and appeal to children and adults alike with her illustrations and page borders that predict what will happen next.

Jan Brett books are not just wonderful stories, but the illustrations are glorious. She gives a prequel to the next page in the margins of the previous page which creates great discussion for predicting what is going to happen next when reading with young readers. About the Author

Allen Cadwallader is Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He is the editor of Essays from the Fourth International Schenker Symposium, Volume 1 (2008) and Trends in Schenkerian Research (1990). His articles have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Int�gral, Theory and Practice, and Journal of Music Theory.

David Gagn� is Associate Professor of Music Theory at Queens College, City University of New York. He is the coeditor of Structure and Meaning in Tonal Music: Festschrift in Honor of Carl Schachter (2006). His articles and reviews have appeared in journals and books including The Music Forum, Music Theory Spectrum, Indiana Theory Review, Int�gral, Schenker Studies 2, and Trends in Schenkerian Research.

Well chosen pieces, very poor instructions!

This workbook has a good selection of pieces for students to use in practicing the Schenkerian method of analysis. They are chosen from repertoire that is by composers of whom Schenker approved but using pieces for which there are not known published analyses. The instructions are unnecessarily long and sometimes include random historical trivia which in no way aids analysis. It was very difficult to glean from the instruction page what was actually the expected result. I nearly always had to wait to get to class and ask for further instructions from the teacher before I could get past a preliminary analysis.

The book came as expected. However, it is not indicated in the title that this is just the accompanying workbook. I realize that the twenty dollar paperback is probably not Cadwallader and Gagne's textbook, but apparently it confused my family enough to buy just this.

it's a workbook not an analized

Quick delivery and high quality printing in and out. But I gave a 4 star because of it's title in ad. In its title I supposed that it might be a book having analysis of tonal works. Now I see that it only has a guide line for analysis. I think it would be helpful for someone but for me. I should have titled "....workbook...." Of course on top of the picture it's written but now I noticed that... It should've included in the title.. That's why I gave a 4star. Though I will just keep it as a reference book.

It is an excellent book and the theology is easy to understand. It is a book well worth reading for those seeking a deeper meaning into how a loving God loves and understands us even when we do not understand ourselves. The late Fr. Sean Fagan was a wonderful writer and theologian and much reviled and shunned by the church he loved.

Intelligent handling of a complex subject

The Church is an ever evolving entity that through an ever deepening understanding of the Bible and the continuing inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we grasp to attain God's kingdom on Earth. Regarding morality, the entire Church needs constant vigilance to discern when moral judgments represent God's will or human self-centeredness that contradicts God's will. While I believe the vast majority of Church teachings reflects God's will, at times it has not, such as teachings that supported slavery, denounced democracy, advocating the killing of heretics & witches, and in the context of the Austrian Conference of Bishops, Nazism. Due to the contributions of other members of the Body of Christ through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, all of these Church teachings have been reversed and now reflect God's will more so. Some of these agents of change had broad support within the Church while others were initially condemned but later vindicated, and sometimes canonized. Regarding another class of moral theology, context related decision-making, it is correct to abide by the Church's teaching that we are forbidden to steal, yet in the classic example of the man who steals bread to feed himself & his starving family when there are no other options to get food, this act of stealing becomes rightful in the eyes of God & the Church. Sean Fagan does an excellent job in discussing complex moral decision-making that reflects God's will & the Church's aspiration to correspond to God's will. God's will does not change but the Church's understanding of it deepens over time. As an end-note, Jesus weighed in on this topic and said that it is the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law that a person needs to follow. The author addresses this issue intelligently & with great loving sensitivity. I am thankful that he is a member of the Body of Christ who is furthering the ongoing establishment of the kingdom of God here on Earth.

Fagan's Folly

The close student of ethics will grasp Father Fagan's thesis by noting to whom the book is dedicated: Bernard Haring and Richard McCormick, both proportionalists. Fagan, too, is a proportionalist--with all which that mistakenly entails (essentially that ethics is situationally dependent; human nature changes; natural law is jejune; and little is objective or permanent--he has trouble, of course, with both Lk 10:16 and Heb 13:8). Although concisely written, the book utterly ignores "Veritatis Splendor," "Evangelium Vitae," and the Catechism. Fagan recommends the usual laundrylist of ultra-liberal ecclesial changes, with little apparent understanding that by embracing his program, the Catholic Church would become a kind of sacerdotal unitarianism. Father Fagan says he "passionately" loves the Church. I do not doubt him or his word in that regard. But his proportionalism is badly mistaken (as "Veritatis Splendor" tells us--see especially #32 and #53); his church history is tendentious; and his lists of "fixes" (see, e.g., p. 205) is leftist ideology wearing a miter. Read, instead, Dulles, or May, or Grisez; and see Weigel's masterful "Witness to Hope" or Neuhaus's "Death on a Friday Afternoon."

Introduction

This short book is meant to lay out the essentials of the Christian message, the gospel. It can, therefore, serve as an introduction to the Christian faith for those who are unfamiliar with its teachings or who may have been away from them for some time.

This volume is not just for seekers, however. Many lifelong Christian believers feel they understand the basics of the Christian faith quite well and don't think they need a primer. Nevertheless, one of the signs that you may not grasp the unique, radical nature of the gospel is that you are certain that you do. Sometimes longtime church members find themselves so struck and turned around by a fresh apprehension of the Christian message that they feel themselves to have been essentially "re-converted." This book, then, is written to both curious outsiders and established insiders of the faith, both to those Jesus calls "younger brothers" and those he calls "elder brothers" in the famous Parable of the Prodigal Son.

I am turning to this familiar story, found in the fifteenth chapter of the gospel of St. Luke, in order to get to the heart of the Christian faith. The parable's plot and dramatis personae are very simple. There was a father who had two sons. The younger asked for his share of the inheritance, received it, and promptly left for a far country, where he squandered it all on sensual and frivolous pleasure. He returned home penitently and, to his surprise, was received with open arms by his father. This reception alienated and angered the elder brother greatly. The story closes with the father appealing to his firstborn son to join in the welcome and forgiveness of his younger brother.

On the surface of it, the narrative is not all that gripping. I believe, however, that if the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this famous Parable of the Prodigal Son would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom. Many excellent studies have been written on this Biblical text over the last several years, but the foundation for my understanding of it was a sermon I first heard preached over thirty years ago by Dr. Edmund P. Clowney. Listening to that sermon changed the way I understood Christianity. I almost felt I had discovered the secret heart of Christianity. Over the years I have often returned to teach and counsel from the parable. I have seen more people encouraged, enlightened, and helped by this passage, when I explained the true meaning of it, than by any other text.

I once traveled overseas and delivered this sermon to an audience through an interpreter. Some time later the translator wrote to tell me that, as he was preaching the sermon, he had realized that the parable was like an arrow aimed at his heart. After a period of wrestling and reflection, it brought him to faith in Christ. Many others have told me that this story of Jesus, once they came to understand it, saved their faith, their marriages, and, sometimes literally, their lives.

In the first five chapters I will unlock the parable's basic meaning. In Chapter 6 I will demonstrate how the story helps us understand the Bible as a whole, and in Chapter 7 how its teaching works itself out in the way we live in the world.

I will not use the parable's most common name: the Parable of the Prodigal Son. It is not right to single out only one of the sons as the sole focus of the story. Even Jesus doesn't call it the Parable of the Prodigal Son, but begins the story saying, "a man had two sons." The narrative is as much about the elder brother as the younger, and as much about the father as the sons. And what Jesus says about the older brother is one of the most important messages given to us in the Bible. The parable might be better called the Two Lost Sons.

The word "prodigal" does not mean "wayward" but, according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, "recklessly spendthrift." It means to spend until you have nothing left. This term is therefore as appropriate for describing the father in the story as his younger son. The father's welcome to the repentant son was literally reckless, because he refused to "reckon" or count his sin against him or demand repayment. This response offended the elder son and most likely the local community.

In this story the father represents the Heavenly Father Jesus knew so well. St. Paul writes: "God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses" (2 Corinthians 5:19 – American Standard Version). Jesus is showing us the God of Great Expenditure, who is nothing if not prodigal toward us, his children. God's reckless grace is our greatest hope, a life-changing experience, and the subject of this book.

"This short book is meant to lay out the essentials of the Christian message, the gospel." So begins Timothy Keller's new book The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith. Keller targets both seekers who are unfamiliar with the gospel and longtime church members who may not feel the need for a primer on the gospel.

Keller's book, as the provocative title suggests, is built on one of Jesus' most famous stories: the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15). Keller consents that "on the surface of it, the narrative is not all that gripping." But, he contends that "if the teaching of Jesus is likened to a lake, this famous Parable of the Prodigal Son would be one of the clearest spots where we can see all the way to the bottom." Keller has taught from this passage many times over the years, and says, "I have seen more people encouraged, enlightened, and helped by this passage, when I explained the true meaning of it, than by any other text."

The book is laid out in seven brief chapters which aim to uncover the extravagant (prodigal) grace of God, as revealed in this parable. Keller shows how the parable describes two kinds of "lost" people, not just one. Most people can identify the lostness of the "prodigal son," the younger brother in Jesus' story, who takes his inheritance early and squanders it on riotous living. But Keller shows that the "elder brother" in the parable is no less lost. Together, the two brothers are illustrations of two kinds of people in the world. "Jesus uses the younger and elder brothers to portray the two basic ways people try to find happiness and fulfillment: the way of moral conformity and the way of self-discovery." Both brothers are in the wrong, and when we see this, we discover a radical redefinition of what is wrong with us. "Nearly everyone defines sin as breaking a list of rules. Jesus, though, shows us that a man who has violated nothing on the list of moral misbehaviors may be every bit as spiritually lost as the most profligate, immoral person. Why? Because sin is not just breaking the rules, it is putting yourself in the place of God as Savior, Lord and Judge just as each son sought to displace the authority of the father in his own life." As these quotes hint, Keller's exposition of the two sons lays the groundwork for a penetrating analysis and critique of both moral relativists on the liberal left and religious moralists on the conservative right, showing that the latter are just as lost as the former. What both need is Jesus, whom Keller presents as "the true elder brother," the one who comes to our rescue at his own expense. Through his grace, we are given hope and invited to the great feast of the Father.

As with Keller's preaching, this book is intelligent and winsome, combining thoughtful reflection on both text and culture with searching heart application. Keller's book is effectively illustrated with a liberal use of stories and quotations from literature, movies, and the arts. Most imporantly, the book orients the reader's heart to the hope of the gospel of God's grace revealed in Christ.

One more note: for readers who may have felt intimidated by Keller's recent book The Reason for God, don't shrink away from The Prodigal God. It is probably only 1/3 of the length and much easier to read. I highly recommend it to unbelievers, seekers and established Christians.

What does 'Prodigal' Mean again?

When I received a copy of The Prodigal God I was greatly intrigued by the title. To be honest I thought the author was trying to be a little too cute in his choice for a title. As a result I jumped right in and in effort to figure our where he was going, could not put the little book down.

Author Tim Keller recently wrote the bestselling book The Reason for God to reach out to skeptics. Here in The Prodigal God it seems as though he is reaching out to both those who are flagrantly irreligious and to those who are by common estimation, morally and religiously together.

Keller helpfully reminds us (me) of the definition for prodigal: "recklessly extravagant, having spent everything". Many of us may have a definition that centers on a returning wayward son rather than the reasons why he was actually returning. Keller aims to remind us of the God-centeredness of this parable and by application the stinging rebuke that it is intended to have upon the Pharisees and all of their self-righteous grandchildren.

Throughout the book Keller deals with the characteristics of the younger brother (morally bankrupt), the older brother (morally upright) and the Father (representing God who is abundant in grace to the contrite and opposed to the proud).

A strength of this book is the way in which the author keeps the gospel out of the commonly constructed religious categories. The gospel is never about what you and I do but about what God does. Therefore to try to put Jesus and his message into some sort of parallel religious system simply does not work.

Keller writes:

It is typical for people who have turned their backs on religion to beleive that Christianity is no different. They have been in churches brimming with elder-brother types. They say, `Christianity is just another religion' But Jesus say, no, that is not true. Everybody knows that the Christian gospel calls us away from the licentiousness of younger brotherness, but few realize that it also differs from moralistic elder brotherness.

The elder brother's problem is his self-righteousness, the way he uses his moral record to put God and others in his debt to control them and get them to do what he wants. His spiritual problem is the radical insecurity that comes from basing his self-image on achievements and performance, so he must endlessly prop up his sense of righteousness by putting others down and finding fault. As one of my teachers in seminary put it, the main barrier between Pharisees and God is `not their sins, but their damnable good works.'

Keller reminds us that what we really need is a true elder brother who will go and retrieve wayward, reproachable brothers:

We need one who does not just go to the next country to find us but who will come all teh way from heaven to earth. We need one who is willing to pay not just a finite amount of money, but, at an infinite cost, bring us into God's family, for our debt is much greater. Either as younger brothers or elder brothers we have rebelled against the father. We deserve alienation, isolation, and rejection. The point of the parable is that forgiveness always involves a price-someone has to pay...Our true elder brother took and paid our debt, on the cross, in our place....There Jesus was stripped naked of his robe and dignity, so that we could be cloted with a dignity and standing we don't deserve. One the cross Jesus was treated as an outcast so that we could be brought into God's family freely by grace. There Jesus drank the cup of eternal justice so that we might have the cup of the father's joy. There was no other way for the heavenly father to bring us in, except at the expense of our true elder brother.

In the chapter entitled "The Feast of the Father" Keller reminds us that salvation is experiential, material, individual and communal. The gospel is to transform our individual lives from the inside-out and then transform our communities.

Throughout the book Keller seems to continually reset the need to properly understand the gospel. He even says on occasion that if you think you get it you probably don't and if you are amazingly overwhelmed by the complexities of grace then you are probably beginning to get it. The burden then is for beleivers to continually find themselves tasting and seeing that God is indeed glorious.

He quotes Luther,

A fundamental insight of Martin Luther's was that `religion' is the default mode of the human heart. Your computer operates automatically in a default mode unless you deliberately tell it to do something else. So Luther says that even after you are converted by the gospel your heart will go back to operating on other principles unless you deliberately, repeatedly set it to gospel mode.

I really enjoyed this book. Keller is a terrific writer. His illustrations are extremely well thought out and culturally relevant. The book has a lot of very helpful things to say about the nature of God's grace and the nature of modern day Phariseeism. For this purpose this book is highly recommended. I need books like this and so do my friends. Keller makes a lot of brief, succinct statements that warrant your further consideration. It is these types of pregnant statements that help a little book like this to make a very large impact for a long time.

Another Great Book by Keller

After the publication of The Reason for God, Newsweek hailed Tim Keller as "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century." That is a lofty comparison and one I'm sure must make Keller quite uncomfortable. Yet at some level the comparisons are becoming undeniable. Keller's ability to communicate to believers and unbelievers alike and to do so on an intellectual level clearly parallels that of Lewis. Where Keller's first book offered an explanation as to why we should believe in God, his second, The Prodigal God, focuses on Jesus' best-known parable (and arguably the best-known and most-loved story of all-time) to challenge both believers and skeptics.

In this book Keller makes no claim to originality. He states forthrightly that the message he conveys here is based on a sermon first preached by Dr. Edmund Clowney. That simple sermon, a fresh take on the parable of the Prodigal Son, changed Keller's life and in many ways shaped his ministry. Over the years he has often taught from this parable, both at his church and elsewhere, and he has seen God's hand of blessing in this message. And here he offers it in the form of a short book.

Traditionally, readings of the parable of the Prodigal Son have focused on the younger son and his reconciliation with his father. We learn from such readings that God is willing to receive all those who wander from him. Yet too often we overlook that third character--the older brother. Were the story only about the father and the younger son we would expect that the Pharisees, among those who first heard Jesus tell this parable, would react with joy. Yet we know from Scripture that they walked away in disgust and disbelief. Why? Because the parable pointed to them as examples of the older son. As Keller says, Jesus' purpose in this parable "was not to warm our hearts, but to shatter our categories."

He begins by ensuring the reader has a sense of Jesus' original audience as he taught this parable. There were two groups near Jesus at the time. The first was tax collectors and sinners while the second was composed of Pharisees and teachers of the law. The tax collectors and sinners correspond to the younger brother--people who left the traditional morality of their families and social groups and engaged in what others would consider wild living. The religious leaders, on the other hand, correspond to the older brother, representing the moral and obedient who have never turned from the traditions of their culture and religion. Where the first group seek God through some kind of self-discovery, the second group seeks him through a type of moral conformity. Jesus' message is that both of these approaches are wrong and in this parable he offers his radical alternative. "There are two ways to be your own Savior and Lord," says Keller. "One is by breaking all the moral laws and setting your own course, and one is by keeping all the moral laws and being very, very good."

While Keller focuses attention on both of the brothers, he gives more time to the elder brother. He wants the reader to know that a self-imposed standard of morality is not the same as truly knowing and following Christ. He wants those who are outwardly religious to search their hearts to see if there is an inner faith that goes along with the outward conformity. He challenges Christians with the fact that churches tend to be havens for the older brother kind of believer. "Jesus' teaching consistently attracted the irreligious while offending the Bible-believing, religious people of his day. However, in the main our churches today do not have this effect. The kind of outsiders Jesus attracted are not attracted to contemporary churches, even our most avant-garde ones. We tend to draw conservative, buttoned-down, moralistic people. The licentious and liberated or the broken and marginal avoid church. That can only mean one thing. If the preaching of our ministers and the practice of our parishioners doesn't have the same effect on people that Jesus had, then we must not be declaring the same message that Jesus did. If our churches aren't appealing to younger brothers, they must be more full of elder brothers than we'd like to think."

It is rare that a book effectively spans an audience of both believers and skeptics, but Keller bridges that gap. For skeptics this is a presentation of the gospel message of human sin and God's extravagant grace; for believers it is a recounting of a story that never grows old. For skeptics it is an encouragement to be like the younger son by turning to the loving father who welcomes all who come to him; for believers it is a means of examining hearts to see if we have become like the older brother, so secure in our position that we take the Father's love for granted and even resent it when that love is extended to those whom we feel are less deserving of it.

Though it is unlikely that The Prodigal God will achieve the same level of numerical success as The Reason for God, it remains an exceptionally useful and valuable contribution. While the book's audience is broad, it may well prove most beneficial to Christians. It will set the gospel before them in a fresh way, forcing them to do some difficult but necessary heart work.

Definitely not worth the hype

I bought this book to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam because of recommendations that I read on [...]. The book is currently out of print, and many people will try to buy this book for exorbitantly high prices in some cases. It is not worth any more than cover price in my opinion. I admittedly have a solid background in Genetics from undergrad and research but I probably have the same background in Molecular Biology as every other US med student and I don't think I really learned anything from this book that I didn't already know, or at least anything I wouldn't have learned from UWorld and First Aid. If you struggle with these subjects, this book presents the concepts very clearly and concisely, but if you are not particularly weak in this area, I don't think this book is worth the extra money that it sometimes costs.

basics and details, lacking a middle ground, some integrated questions would be useful.

another important subject that's becoming more highly tested, unfortunately this book fails to find a good middle ground for covering the majority of the topics. a few subjects are effectively covered in this book; the lac operon, blotting techniques, some oncogene stuff, but overall, riddled with not-so-high yield info.

Very comprehensive little book. Great for referring to when the text or lecture notes get complicated. Not intended to replace other materials, but a nice enhancement for understanding.

I love this book!

This guide is not only helpful, it's absolutely hilarious. The writing is of a much higher level than you'd expect in a standard guide. It's smart, it's brutally honest (when they don't like something, they let you KNOW), and it doesn't pull any punches. New Orleans is a strange and wonderful place, and all guidebooks to it should be this good. But since they aren't, buy this one.
