About the Author
Andy Field is Professor of Child Psychopathology at The University of Sussex. He adores cats, listens to and plays loud music and enjoys teaching statistics. His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognised with teaching awards from the University of Sussex (2001), the British Psychological Society (2007) and in 2010 he was awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship.

SPSS "bible"/"survival manual!US student & victim of subpar teaching of SPSS - $ saved & invested in this book - Grades go up

I LOVE Andy Field! I found him and use him since my experience with poor professors I had teaching me intro stats "dumbed down" or the term was explanatory math without the greek symbols making what was once easy stats concepts difficult behavioral science M, SD, etc. My professor for research methods had an issue w/students laptops,food,etc. & strayed away from lecture to point out non-research methods classroom behaviors. We did not develop our own project but used his long story short SPSS files were automatically done & we keyed in 2 participants & analysis was done in this poor delivery. SPSS involved in 2 classes, but ignorant at using SPSS for my upper division real research laboratories. After conducting my own research with participants, coding, I was asked to run a crosstabs analysis & left briefly in tears. I calmed down and remembered Andy Field's youtube videos and went to Amazon to order this book right away! I did have a "borrowed" copy/pdf version of this book but it was not functional on screen & a hard copy was desirable. I really wanted the big book to use for easy reference during all of my course work currently & in Grad school... The UK focus or preferred stats/design terminology is different, but not significant enough that I do not understand it or cannot find it useful. For instance, the terms homogeneity & bootstrapping is used much more than in the US with their favored terms generalizability and Cronbach's alpha. Long story short - this book is worth the $$$ & it can be used for a variety of non-spss reference material too - Cradle of Filth examples had me SOLD - my upper division professors were proficient & effective at teaching, but they assumed I was skilled in SPSS at that level and I was unfortunate to have professors that did not trust their students could understand and perform stats/research methods without "easy language" or doing the whole project for the class (he said past classes failed to come up with topics, hypothesis questions, & they did not turn in quality work. Do not let your professors enable your ignorance! This made it so hard for me in my upper division - always behind every student - until I bought Discovering Stats Using SPSS
