A Fine Collection and a Superb Translation

I am so delighted by this book. The poetry is by authors such as Ludwig Tieck, Franz Clemens Brentano, Josef Von Eichendorf, Novalis, and more. These are some of the finest authors of that lush period known as "Romantic Literature" to have to have there works assembled here. Moreover, the translations are excellent, and the English and German is set side by side in a very practical-sized type, making it extremely comfortable to read and enjoy. I should mention that the book is a sturdy paper back, much better than average, so it's more durable when schlepping it around to and from campus. I would recommend this collection not only to students of German Romantic Literature, but also to those studying English Literature, as writers from both periods were very influenced by each other. This might make for some wonderfully interesting topics for papers your papers. I highly recommend this book for English students or students of German that are studying the Romantic Period.

Nice collection.

This is a nice collection of poetry, which I bought solely for the German, not the translated, poetry. The translations are usually pretty good, faithful to the language and the feeling of the original poem--as much as possible with a translation, of course. There were a few poems where I felt that the English word-choice was not what I would have chosen, and that another would have conveyed the flavor of the English word better, or, less often, that the change in the word-order, while making the poem read more "English," was not the word order I would have used. Nonetheless, for the selection of poetry alone, I give this collection 4 stars. It would probably be a nice gift for a high school student studying German (who enjoys poetry), particularly since adolescence is the perfect time of life to be reading the Romantics, which resonate well with the highs and lows of the teenage years! It would also be nice for someone who studied German years ago, but hasn't read it in a while, since the English side of the text can provide a bit of help when the meaning of a word or two escapes. It's also not a bad choice if you just want to read some German poetry and are having a hard time finding anything in the original, although it is a very slim volume.

For the Deadlifter or Weight Training Historian

- Why I Read This Book

I always enjoy reading about the training methods of past masters. In addition, I had been plagued with back problems, and I was particularly interested in the chapters on back ailments.

- Positives

This book has great histories about Louis Cyr, Hermann Goerner, and the Saxon brothers. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of George Jowett's entire booklet, Molding a Mighty Back (I also recommend reading Molding A Mighty Grip). This book has a few great technical articles. My favorite was by Vince Arnello, who also reviewed this book. There are a few good tips throughout that stuck with me, as for example to never let a bad back get cold (I purchased some back warmers from a military surplus site for this reason).

Oddly enough, my favorite article in this anthology had nothing to do with the back...but with grip training: the "Grip" chapter on the bartender Mac Batchelor.

- Negatives
Of course, some articles are much better than others. For that reason, it took me a long time to work through this book (which was certainly worth the effort to get to the many gems).

The biggest issues with this anthology are the formatting, editing, and picture quality. Sometimes it is difficult to discern what is part of the article and what is the editor's insert.

-Final Thoughts

Overall, a great book for the serious deadlifter or the weight training historian. For more weight training history I strongly recommend The Super-Athletes: a Record of the Limits of Human Strength, Speed, and Stamina. For those with bad backs, I recommend 7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life: How to Rapidly Relieve Back and Neck Pain and Fixing You: Back Pain 2nd edition: Self-Treatment for Back Pain, Sciatica, Bulging and Herniated Discs, Stenosis, Degenerative Discs, and other Diagnoses..

Great information, but is in serious need of editing/layout help. It's mostly a book of copy/paste/print of articles from the 20th Century. Still very cool for someone like me who is an enthusiast and doesn't have time/can't find these old articles anywhere.

This is a collection of short tales about contemporary New York and America written in the early 1960s. As you might expect, Wolfe is a little more rough around the edges here, and so there is a little hit and miss. Excellent intro to basic design principles!

I started reading this book yesterday afternoon because I wanted to spruce up my business card. The author's introduction & explanation to basic design principles was clear, easy to understand, & illustrated with plenty of visual examples. I've always been a hobbyist designer, initially relying on MS Publisher templates to put things together but then gradually started making my own designs from scratch over the years, so I thought my initial design for my business card was pretty good. But as I read through this book, the author gave several examples of amateur mistakes, many of which I was guilty of. But then the author also gave examples of how to fix these mistakes by employing the design principles she explains. This is probably one of the most useful books I've ever purchased!

Worth the extra money--this edition is even better than her earlier works

I teach graphic design courses at a local community college and this updated edition is well worth the extra $2 (from the previous edition). It still provides easy to understand examples of the concepts she covers then explains why these are important. But its updated graphics gives it a much more professional yet friendly feel and she cut back on cuteness that seemed to diminish the level of knowledge within it.

Awesome book that packs design essentials into a compact and easy to read book!

Robin has packed in a ton of experience and design principles into this easy to read book. Unlike some other books drone on and convey little, each page of this book seems loaded with tips and techniques that you can put into practice. For example, I learned more about type design from a single chapter in this book than from an entire book on type (Thinking in Type) that I had purchased simultaneously.

Pema Chödrön may have more good one-liners than a Groucho Marx retrospective, but this nun's stingers go straight to the heart: "The essence of bravery is being without self-deception"; "When we practice generosity, we become intimate with our grasping"; "Difficult people are the greatest teachers." These are the punctuations to specific teachings of fearlessness. In The Places That Scare You, Chödrön introduces a host of the compassionate warriors' tools and concepts for transforming anxieties and negative emotions into positive living. Rather than steeling ourselves against hardship, she suggests we open ourselves to vulnerability; from this comes the loving kindness and compassion that are the wellsprings of joy. How do we achieve it? Through meditation, mindfulness, slogans, aspiration, and several other practices, such as tonglen, which is taking in the pain and suffering of others while sending out happiness to all--emphasis on the all. Chödrön introduces each of these practices in turn, backing them up with succinct practical reasoning and a framework of ideas that offers fresh interpretations of familiar words like strength, laziness, and groundlessness. Here she once again presents Tibetan Buddhist wisdom in a clear, engaging, and undiluted way, making it useful and relevant for newcomers and longtime practitioners alike. This time her focus is on bodhichitta, a concept that roughly translates as "open heart" or "awakened mind." As the text points out, this is a term more easily understood than translated, finding its ground in activities that embody compassion, tenderness, and awareness. In a series of short chapters, the reader is introduced to a number of ideas found in Tibetan Buddhist bodhichitta practice and is given practical exercises for daily life. Her clear and simple descriptions guide the reader through these powerful and sometimes difficult practices. I can't say enough about how great this book is. As always I find that I must savor this book. This is not one that you would get, read in a night and move on with your life. If you do that you're missing the opportunity to grow and learn. Pema Chodron is a wise and compassionate teacher. This book teaches to be present with the energy behind the story, behind the drama. It offers an opportunity to become a peaceful happy person capable of making the world around us a better place.

This book was transformative for me. Mired in pain and grief after my wife left, I was unable to make any sense of my life. And then I read this book, and it opened up a path for me that helped me understand what I was experiencing and how it could serve as the way toward enlightenment.

I am halfway through this book and it is nothing short of life altering. It is definitely a must read. Especially if you are a survivor. Sometimes we feel the need to numb out what we are feeling in healthy and unhealthy ways, this talks about sitting with those feelings and treating ourselves with compassion.

SPSS "bible"/"survival manual!US student & victim of subpar teaching of SPSS - $ saved & invested in this book - Grades go up

I LOVE Andy Field! I found him and use him since my experience with poor professors I had teaching me intro stats "dumbed down" or the term was explanatory math without the greek symbols making what was once easy stats concepts difficult behavioral science M, SD, etc. My professor for research methods had an issue w/students laptops,food,etc. & strayed away from lecture to point out non-research methods classroom behaviors. We did not develop our own project but used his long story short SPSS files were automatically done & we keyed in 2 participants & analysis was done in this poor delivery. SPSS involved in 2 classes, but ignorant at using SPSS for my upper division real research laboratories. After conducting my own research with participants, coding, I was asked to run a crosstabs analysis & left briefly in tears. I calmed down and remembered Andy Field's youtube videos and went to Amazon to order this book right away! I did have a "borrowed" copy/pdf version of this book but it was not functional on screen & a hard copy was desirable. I really wanted the big book to use for easy reference during all of my course work currently & in Grad school... The UK focus or preferred stats/design terminology is different, but not significant enough that I do not understand it or cannot find it useful. For instance, the terms homogeneity & bootstrapping is used much more than in the US with their favored terms generalizability and Cronbach's alpha. Long story short - this book is worth the $$$ & it can be used for a variety of non-spss reference material too - Cradle of Filth examples had me SOLD - my upper division professors were proficient & effective at teaching, but they assumed I was skilled in SPSS at that level and I was unfortunate to have professors that did not trust their students could understand and perform stats/research methods without "easy language" or doing the whole project for the class (he said past classes failed to come up with topics, hypothesis questions, & they did not turn in quality work. Do not let your professors enable your ignorance! This made it so hard for me in my upper division - always behind every student - until I bought Discovering Stats Using SPSS

This book is an indepth reading book on the authority of those who are born again christians.
It has really helped me to understand how to stand in my authority in Christ and recognize where self has been getting in the way.

If you have been listening to Billie Brim with Gloria Copeland lately, you know she keeps referring to this book. She said Kenneth Hagin bought it and carried it with him at all times. This book really teaches us the authority we have as Christians in the world we live in. Some of these old timers knew and used that authority and we can all learn from them. Sad to say that many churches today have become too worldly or into psychology instead of the Bible.
There is a lot of things we think we have to put up with in life when we can be taking authority over them instead.
Excellent teaching.
