Excellent, and very thorough, resource for teachers!

I am a history teacher teacher and bought this book so that I could learn how to make Quipu with my classes. I found it to be extremely thorough. It begins by explaining what Quipu is and how to make quipu out of household items. . .that part was GREAT, although the directions were a bit tricky. It then explores what Quipu was used for and provides numerous examples of different Quipu. The pictures, though they are not in color, are great. This book is excellent for anyone wanting to learn the intricacies of Quipu. It is also an excellent resource for computer and/or math teachers; it explains how Quipu is used in the same way that databases are used. You can't help but notice the similarities between Quipu and an abacus, either. One thing it did appear to lack was any explanation or translation of an authentic Incan Quipu.

I picked this up when I was looking for a light read and when I saw that it was set in Rome I knew I had to read it! The story is well paced if somewhate predictable, but with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. It includes gorgeous descriptions of the city as well as little known facts and hidden locations off the tourist trail which would be even more enjoyable if you were planning a trip to Rome. A great holiday read that leaves you wishing for some summer sun!

About the Author
Tom Nguyen is a full-time freelancer, primarily for DC Comics, but other clients include Marvel Comics, Wizard Magazine, Upper Deck Entertainment and others. Along with artist Doug Mahnke, he has produced two DVDs: The Tom Nguyen Style of Comic Book Inking and The Doug Mahnke Style of Comic Book Penciling. Tom Nguyen has also written Incredible Comics with Tom Nguyen (IMPACT 2007).

This is what I have been waiting for!

I have been searching for a book like this. I have tried other books and their work is just so over-stylized that it makes it very difficult to use or accept. I really enjoy your professional approach in introducing rough sketches vs many rendered images. It really adds a fresh understanding of art in general; thus, it is open to different genres and mediums. Amiable, the ideas in this book is open to sculpting, painting or photo editing. The many details of a head or figure can be easily lost in mid process while creating the overall structure in a piece of work. This book helps me highlights certain areas of the face and body - it is easy to forget the important parts of a human Deciding what is to be positive or negative space is often frusterating when shading; here there is quick reference to rejuvenate an ear, eye, nose etc. - in a more interesting perspective. I am looking forward to more works by you on this subject. It is not easy to find anything on this subject where the author identifies and shows the more stunning forms and views of the female figure.

This book is by far the most superior book on drawing women out on the market to date. I actually borrowed this book from the kindle store, but after going through it I had to grab a hard copy. The Do's and Don'ts in here are super helpful along with the reference photos this book is just a blast to get through. In my opinion this is a far better book than Christopher Hart's How to Draw Great-Looking Comic Book Women. The only down side is that, I want more content and that its not sold through prime!

Awesome Book on Drawing Women

Tom's book Incredible Comic Book Women is a gem of knowledge in the "how to draw" genre of books. The female figure is perhaps one of the most challenging to draw and render properly but Tom shows you how to draw women with finesse, skill and confidence once you practice his instruction and technique. Tom provides great examples of do's and don'ts. He covers a woman's anatomy with good taste, with purposeful illustrations he himself has drawn and with with good bits of humor throughout the book.

If you are a beginner in drawing do not be intimidated with the content in the book because the only way you will become skillful is to practice, practice and keep practicing. Just follow Tom's guidelines and instructions with commitment and you will get it. Also if you have not purchased his other book titled, "Incredible Comics" buy that that one too because he covers how to draw us guys.

Great book and this one will be a mainstay in my library for all time. I hope Tom comes out with new titles in the near future.

The Missing Christmas Card

It is one week before Christmas, and Nate the Great is shoveling his walk. However, he’s about to get a new client when Annie and her dog Fang show up. Fang always gets a Christmas card from his mother, but this year it hasn’t arrived. While Nate and Fang don’t exactly get along (Nate would rather shovel the walk), he reluctantly begins to search for the missing card. What clues can he find?

Somehow, I’ve never read this particular book over the years, and I found it to be fun. Once again, the clues are there, so it is rather obvious when Nate solves it how he did even though I didn’t figure it out early myself. But there is fun to be had along the way with Annie, Fang, and Rosamand and her cats (if not Oliver who is absent from this book).

If you are looking for a Christmas mystery for your young kid, this is definitely the picture book for you. You’ll both enjoy seeing just what became of the card.

Perfect book for 1st grade boy

The Nate the Great series are perfect books for 1st grade boys (and girls...) They are not too long but they also do not have too many pictures. It would be good for girls, too. It's somewhat gender-neutral. It can be read in one sitting (about 15 - 30 minutes depending on how well your 1st grader is reading.) It does not have chapters, however. Because if this, it's tough to find a good place to "stop."

About the Author
Michael Glauser, Ph.D., is the executive director of the Jeffrey D. Clark Center for Entrepreneurship at Utah State University, an entrepreneur, business consultant, and university professor. He is the co-founder and CEO of My New Enterprise, an online training and development company. He is also the founder and former CEO of Golden Swirl Management Company and of Northern Lights. Both companies were sold to CoolBrands International. Mike has consulted with numerous corporations in the areas of business strategy, market research, organizational effectiveness, and leadership development. His clients have included Associated Food Stores, The Boeing Company, Department of Workforce Services, Esso of Inter-America, Harmon Music Group, and USANA Health Sciences.

Glauser has held faculty positions at the University of North Carolina, Westminster College, and Utah State University. He has designed and taught courses in business strategy, entrepreneurship, management, and organizational behavior. Recommended summer reading for the small town entrepreneur.

Main Street Entrepreneur: Build Your Dream Company Doing What You Love Where You Live details the bicycle journey of author, professor, entrepreneur and business consultant Michael Glauser as he pedaled across the nation. He made the trip with team members who supported the journey, shot videos, rode alongside him and drove the motor home where they all slept at night. They interviewed successful entrepreneurs who started their companies in small towns, most of which had populations of fewer than 30,000 people.

I was not surprised that these business owners started with a compelling idea. I was surprised that for so many of them, that idea was: "I really like living here. How can I settle down and support my family?" They found answers that often provided jobs to other people in their communities.

Why is Main Street enjoying a resurgence now? Glauser puts it this way:

"Ironically, we can use the same technology that is destroying corporate jobs to live where we want, reach markets beyond our geographical location, and take advantage of the growing preference for smaller businesses over large corporations,"

He interviewed people who sell products and services over the internet, but he also features plenty of bricks-and-mortar business owners who had a knack for supplying what their customers were looking for. (Many of the businesses featured have some connection to health and fitness. When you consider that the bicycle trek from Pacific to Atlantic encompassed 4000 miles via bicycle, it makes sense.)

So much of what I read backs up the country way of life I already know. Small-town neighbors help each other out. While they understand their businesses needs to sustain themselves, small-town entrepreneurs aren't necessarily in it for the money. They know how to access resources without it. That said, some of the businesses featured were remarkably successful.

I enjoyed a theme that ran through so many of the profiles: these people absolutely love where they live. They contribute to their communities, and their little towns love them back.

The book is also something of a how-to manual. Glauser identified common threads in the entrepreneurs' stories to clarify what made them successful. The book includes questions at the end of each chapter to help a would-be entrepreneur walk herself through the process of starting a successful business.

It;'s good advice, and the stories were delightful. So that's my recommended summer reading for the small-town business.

Dr. Michael Glauser has really captured the essence of what true bootstrapping means to small business owners in America. His journey across the US led me along, while all the time asking myself questions about how I am running my own venture. Uber-yuppie Rachel Whitman worries about the teasing her slow-witted six-year-old son Dylan suffers at the hands of his brilliant playmate Lucinda at the fancy Massachusetts North Shore day care center he attends; worse, she fears that her college drug experimentation caused Dylan's deficiency. Seeing Rachel's distress, Lucinda's mother, Sheila, confides that Lucinda was much like Dylan until she was treated by Dr. Lucius Malenko at his exclusive Nova Children's Center to medically enhance her intelligence. Malenko's other patients include young Julian Watts, who works hours on end making exquisite pointillist paintings and has ground his teeth to nubs; Brendan LaMotte, who has a computer-like memory and deep emotional problems (he fantasizes about killing his grandfather); and Nicole DaFoe, who's sleeping with her history teacher and sabotages her academic rival to secure an important scholarship. Meanwhile, dogged police detective Greg Zakarian obsessively pores over the long-unsolved death of an unidentified little boy, even as another boy is abducted. This convoluted yarn works best when Braver keeps all his storylines in play, but as the plot unfolds, he focuses mostly on Rachel, whose worries about her son's failure to over-achieve make her the most conventional and perhaps least compelling of his characters. Still, he paints a rich tableau of creepy medical details and middle-class status anxiety and pulls off an explosive finale.

The title of Braver's second novel refers to the brain, to be sure, but also to the gray areas of human morality, surgical ethics, and human relationships. Neurologist Lucius Malenko got his start as a researcher in the Ukraine. When Soviet leaders learned of his experiments with mental enhancement in animals, they supported similar work on humans. After he came to the U.S., Malenko worked secretly for the National Security Agency, then set up a children's center in New England to capitalize on well-to-do, well-educated parents' desires to have their average children's IQs enhanced. The enterprise became a goldmine, and Malenko used the profits to set up his "Smart Money Portfolio." Quietly told, carefully censored success stories led more victims into Malenko's trap. Braver's intriguing tale never stumbles; everything in it, no matter how appalling, fits in believably as Malenko lies about personality changes in enhanced children, sets parent against parent, and has potential whistleblowers and kids who "fail" his operations destroyed. Your Very Own Super Tot

"Gray Matter" is first and foremost a thriller with a capitol "T." It is 400 pages, so arrange your schedule accordingly. Allow yourself an hour or so to eat and sleep; nothing else will distract you from this biotech/medical thriller.
In this day and age of funneling affluent children from birth into the "right" preschool, prep school and college; is it unthinkable to want to "enhance" Johnny's all-to-average I.Q.? I find this most believable when we have platoons of small children robotically marching from ballet to play dates (a term I particularly despise) to tutorial groups to soccer practice. Many need an appointment secretary just to march in place.
The Whitmans are an upwardly mobile dream couple, wealthy, handsome and living in one of Boston's most desirable suburbs. The only cloud on their horizon is son Dylan's Learning Disability. Dylan is a happy six-year old with a wonderful ability to sing and memorize show tunes (with gestures). He is an outgoing, gentle, loving little boy, but let's face it, an I.Q. of 83. He is behind other children in his cognitive abilities and grasp of abstract concepts. His days of the week are Monday, Twosday, Threesday, etc.
The Whitmans are distressed and want the best for their son. By clandestine word of mouth, they hear of the possible "enhancement" of mental abilities, even doubling of I.Q.s from a friend who has an irritatingly bright daughter. Meanwhile in a parallel story an obsessed cop has been searching for three years for the identity of a dead child. All he has to go on is a skull with a series of small drilled holes in it. We meet a few of these "enhanced" children, and they are as advertised: brilliant. But all seem to suffer side effects of loss of affect or compulsive behavior. As the Whitmans get closer to accepting the expensive procedure, the more sinister the situation becomes. The parents become divided on what is best to do. Some of the other parents are in heartbreaking situations.
Mr. Braver is skillful in his plotting, notching up the tension incrementally. He has a graceful way of bringing his characters to life. Dylan is a truly fetching little boy and becomes compellingly important to the reader. This novel delivers and will make you think. Be prepared to count off at least a few people you know right in your own backyard that might see "enhancement" as a very good thing indeed.

A Profound Journey

Gray Matter takes you on a profound journey with Braver's sympathetic characters. There's universal appeal here. Every parent has moments when they wonder if their children could be "enhanced," whether or not they're learning disabled - whether through the use of tutors or in the extreme situation in Gray Matter, through brain surgery.
I'm not a horror fan, but I love the way Braver draws you in and horrifies you. At several junctures, I found myself saying "Oh, no!" out loud (this was true with Elixir, Braver's earlier book, also excellent). While most of the brain altered kids are pretty scary to comtemplate, Brendan, a brain-altered teenager, is the exception and my favorite character. He's a fascinating young man whose mind doesn't function normally, and Braver does a superb job of letting you share his world.
Gray Matter is an easy read and totally accessible even though it's 400 pages of thought-provoking intelligent material. That's Braver's great strength and what makes his books stay with you after you finish them. The writing and characterization is great and the plots are totally unique and close enough to reality to have profound implications.
My last thought: He has some powerful descriptive passages,and I love the way he brings the Massachusetts setting to life, from the fictional wealthy suburb of Hawthorne to his description of Cambridge's Mass Ave: "With Harvard at one end and MIT at the other end, Mass Ave was like a giant filament blazing with the greatest concentration of mind power in the world." His use of language, for example, the way he uses the word "Incandescent", will draw you in and stay with you.

Gray Matter is great reading matter.

Like Braver's excellent previous novel, "Elixer," "Gray Matter" represents the bio-medical thriller at its best. While on one hand a true page turner -- fast-paced and suspenseful -- it also raises a number of controversial issues related to such subjects as the nature of human intelligence, experimental medical practices, and parental pressures to do what's best for their children (or perhaps more accurately, for themselves?) The story considers how far parents should -- and will -- go to ensure that their children grow up with all the advantages superior brain power offers. Moreover, what is the cost of enlisting extraordinary medical procedures to enhance thinking capabilities, especially in terms of the ultimate effects on the personalities of the young subjects? Gray Matter makes both your brain and heart race, its subject matter made even more compelling with the current discussions surrounding the recent announcements of human cloning efforts. I highly recommend this book.
