A must-have for any aromatherapy student.

This is a well written and comprehensive book on the safety of essential oils for all practitioners. It offers refreshing data based on scientific information, rather than hand-me-down misconceptions redelivered over and over in numerous other texts. The only down-side is that it was written 15yrs ago and while the information is not "out" dated, there needs to be an "updated" version to carry on where this left off. Still a worthy investment.

Safety has to underpin good practice

Any aromatherapist must of course make certain that safe practice is the foundation for her/his work. Though this book is now quite old, it still fills a gap in the market, and is, to my knowledge the only reasonably priced book which focuses only on safety - contraindications and cautions for conditions and specific client groups, specific oils and specific chemical constituents within specific oils.

It is certainly one of the most well thumbed books on my groaning aromatherapy shelf, the first one I turn to when working with clients presenting with health issues which I suspect have led to compromise in the actions of liver, kidneys, the skin itself, or are on prescription medication which may affect the safe choice of specific oils. Nor would i add a new oil to my extensive kit before starting my research into it via the EOS book

The elderly date of last revision of the book, and the absence of a body of information about recent positive research studies prohibit the final 5th star; however I can't afford Bob Harris's EORC database (several hundred pounds)

Until Robert brings out a revised version (I believe this has been planned for MANY years) my battered EOS will continue to suffer the wear and tear of constant handling

An Excellent Synopsis

This book contains everything a modern reader who is anything but a professional Middle East scholar could ever want to know about the history of the region (especially about the Arab-Israeli conflicts). Most importantly, it is presented in a strictly factual, unemotional manner which allows the reader to understand the current problems there and to make his or her own judgments without the facts being skewed or, indeed, being portrayed in a subjective light at all. With this account under one's belt, it is impossible to see the conflicts of the Middle East in a wholly black-and-white, right-and-wrong way. Indeed, the cold facts show how all parties involved have countless reasons for their behavior, and how no one party can ever be completely blamed.
Having also read what Mansfield himself considered to be his crowning achievement, "The Arabs", I actually feel that this is a superior work, at least for my purposes. "A History of the Middle East" presents a more sweeping view for the amateur (but serious) scholar, and can be used as a good reference despite being more than a decade old.
Mansfield follows the region from prehistory, through the Ottoman Empire, and into the modern age, explaining events and motivations in a reasonable and straightforward manner.
It must be mentioned that this is not an exciting book for those without a passionate interest in foreign affairs. But those who are driven to know and understand the goings-on of the modern world will find it an invaluable addition to their library.

2 books in one, buy the first edition.

I believe the original author Mansfield would be disappointed in what Nicolas Pelham has done with this "revised and updated" version of his book. Mansfield died in 1996 and Pelham was given the task of "updating" this history of the Middle East. I was very impressed with the first 340 pages of this book. I was looking for an even-keeled, unbiased history of this very charged and polarizing subject. I was very pleased to find that Peter Mansfield had done exactly that. Mansfield's original work went up to the first Gulf War and provided a very even history of events from ancient times to the immediate post-Gulf War period. He provides a very readable account that puts current events into context without betraying his own bias. I had been recommending this book to many friends, before I came to Pelham's contribution that picks up in the post war period. He doesn't even try to contain his contempt for the United States and it's allies. The language and tone of the book change dramatically and it is easy to tell where Pelham picks up in the 13th chapter: The Inter-War Years. His contribution amounts to an intensely felt indictment of the United States and it's policy in Middle Eastern affairs. He loses credibility when he throws in trite and petty personal attacks on Western leadership that have no relation to the events he is describing. Even the grammatical integrity changes. There were multiple grammatical and spelling errors in Pelham's chapter. The transition from Mansfield to Pelham is very abrupt and disruptive, regardless of your political leanings. I am very disappointed as the first 340 pages were excellent and exactly what I was hoping for. If you must buy this edition than be prepared. I would have given Mansfield's book 5+ stars and Pelham's contribution 1 star (being generous). I still gave the book a 4 star average because Mansfield's work deserves recognition and it comprised the bulk of the book.

A great book

This book is not only very informative and well written but also manages to be reasonably impartial on some of the hottest issues in international relations. The tone changes slightly when Pelham takes over from Mansfield but this is also when we approach the present time. I appreciated the fact that criticism is not one-sided as undoubtedly the Israel-vs-Palestinians problem cannot be summarized by placing all blame on any one side. In fact, I found the exposition more balanced and less negative against Israel than I was expecting from somebody who studied arabic in Damascus and is currently living in Jordan.
Perhaps the Pelham portion would deserve only 4 stars but the rest of the book would be 5+. I would have appreciated a few more and more informative maps but an overall 5 is well deserved.

A triumph of rigorous scholarship

The dopamine handbook is the culmination of five decades of research. It is what we have needed in relation to each of the known neurotransmitters. Within one volume it has captured so much of what is known and what is currently being considered about dopamine and brain function. It's great strengths are the range of authors, the depth of detail and the willingness to make formulations based on a great deal of mature scientific reflection. It would be churlish to point out inadequacies but the intellectually greedy among us would have loved a section, or at least a chapter, on Huntington Disease and more on the noradrenergic interface with dopamine beyond the cursory coverage on pages 582-3. A final summary of the most critical consensus would have also been helpful. But all of this is the counsel of perfection. This volume makes a serious and definitive contribution to the body of research around dopamine, ensuring that the field can now see what is there and move forward in a more informed and certain manner. The authors are giants in the field and we are grateful for this landmark contribution. It seems likely that this will set the standard for the mature collation of research around neurotransmitters and form the classic work on dopamine for the next five years at which time we shall expect, perhaps even demand,an update.

This book is a must have for any serious investigator of dopaminergic neurons, its pathways and its clinical relevance. The editors have put together an authoritative collection of up-to-date reviews on the subject written by current leaders in the field and gleaned from over 50 years of research. It's well worth the price.

If u are an old hand at neurochemistry u need this still. If u are new: welcome to the clearest writing on the subject I been studying for yrs but was continually baffled by the lack of clear writing. This is the best with few exceptions. Enjoy.

Dolores Umbridge, the most evil character in the Harry Potter series.

It's hard to write a review for a book in a series that you've read more times than you can remember, and seen the movie more times than you could count. From that statement alone it should be obvious that I'm a big fan of the Harry Potter series. Do I write my review based upon my first time reading it, or the everlasting impression this book has left me with? I think that fact that this book has made me think and ponder certain ideas over the years, I think the everlasting impression should be the topic of my review.

After encountering Dolores Umbridge, I was left pondering the question "What is evil?" Voldemort is obviously the Villian of the series, however I feel Umbridge is a much more sinister and evil Villian than even Voldemort. Voldemort's actions and evil deeds are really very simple to understand. What motivates him is power and greed and he is willing to go to any lengths to achieve those goals. While evil in itself, his motives and actions are very straight forward and easy to understand. It is easy to see Voldemort for the evil that he is, which therefore keeps him in hiding only surrounded by his Death Eaters. Dolores Umbridge is a very different type of evil. Dolores Umbridge is the type of evil that we, the muggles that we are, encounter on a daily basis. They are the people who enjoy the hurt, pain, chaos and distrust they cause through their manipulations and lies. The enjoy the devastation they cause in their wake. The fact that she can create the heartache she relishes so much with a false smile, sweet sanguine falsetto, and splashes of whimsy to give the impression of naïveté and an innocent childlike behavior which puts one off initially of comprehending the true evil she inflicts to hide the monster she is, and the fact that through these false tactics she has risen to a position of power to inflict heartache unto others, shows she is a master at hiding her true psychopathic personality. This sick personality trait is shown most clearly when she makes Harry write lines in detention. She knows Harry is telling the truth, yet she lies and manipulates him until she is in a position of power directly over him in detention at which point she not only continues her lies causing mental anguish to Harry, she continues her evil machinations by causing him physical pain by forcing him to use her quill which scratches and ultimately scars Harry for the rest of his life. Umbridge enjoys Harry's suffering. She even inspects his hand at the end of each detention to make sure he is being cut and that his hand is bleeding and then in a well satisfied way compliments Harry on completing his detention. Her only praise is when Harry does something to cause hurt and pain and twists what he knows is the truth into something false. This is standard textbook psychopathic behavior in domestic abusers.

The fact that Doloros Umbridge can navigate society in such a way as to gain a position if importance in the Minisrptry of Magic and flourish in normal wizarding society while hiding her insidious psychopathic tendencies leaves her in an excellent position of power to inflict hurt to others. Her brand if evil is subtle and is not so obvious at a first glance which gives her the ability to "blend in" with others and yet she victimizes many in her wake, as she navigates through life. In Voldemort's case, his brand of evil is so obvious to everyone that he is an outcast of the wizarding community, which ultimately lessens the number of his potential victims to those simply standing in his way of power, while in Umbridge's case her victim pool is limitless die to her access to the community and all those she comes across.

So here is the moral question I have pondered for many years since reading this book for the first time. "Which Behavior Is More Evil?" Personally, I feel Dolores Umbridge is the much more evil of the two characters based upon the reasons given in the prior paragraph. Whether you agree or disagree with me is not the point. The point is to make you think and ponder for yourself. The fact that this book makes you think long after you've turned the last page, is a mark of literacy success. Whiter you've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix once, or a hundred times, it is always a great novel to read again and again, and question what constitutes as evil.

Journey's end...

All along, Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort were eventually going to have to confront each other one final time. In "Deathly Hallows", the final book of the Harry Potter series, Harry and Voldemort will circle each other at a distance, each seeking to solve the mystery of the other. In Harry's case, he, Ron, and Hermione will spend a long season on the run, trying to sort out their very few clues about how to defeat Voldemort. In the case of the Dark Lord, he will move from success to apparent success, closing in on Hogwarts and final victory...

This is a long book, enough to fill two movies, filled with the characters of the earlier books. There is a fascinating story here, one with moral depth and emotional content. Wise readers will understand not only how Harry Potter comes to his moment of destiny, but why. Few readers will be left unmoved. Very highly recommended to fans of the franchise. Be sure to read the afterword.

With all of the reprints of the Harry Potter series (paperback, new cover art, movie pictures, etc), we were trying to complete our collection of the original hard back books. We didn't start buying these for our collection until book #5 when the series had gained such a huge following. We were so glad we could find these individually here on Amazon to get the missing ones.

The Prisoner of Azkaban continues a fascinating and engaging series. Book one of the series was very lighthearted as the world and characters were introduced. There was indeed a conflict and a villain, but the focus was on the world itself and the magic we could find in it. Book two continued in that world but had a noticeably darker tone (as did many of the later books). However, Book three returned us to a lighter tone while creating a self-encased conflict and villain with some really neat time-travelling plot twists (think of Bill and Ted or Back to the Future). The last four books tell more of a continuous narrative while I feel that each of the first three is more standalone. Yes, they end with an explanation of how the self-contained events fit into the overarching conflict of the series. But the individual plot elements of the books seem to lend themselves to the story at hand rather than the overall conflict. It seems that this changes with Book four when many parts of the book focus more on the overall plot rather than the individual book plot.

Even if you've seen the movies, the books are deserving of a read. The cliche that the books are always better than the movies holds very true here. We hope that JK Rowling continues to write for many years and that she can create other worlds that are equally as imaginative and engaging as this one. Thanks for a great ride!
