About the Author
Belverd E. Needles, Jr., received his BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. His textbooks are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including (in 2008) the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. Active in many academic and professional organizations, he is immediate past vice president-education of the American Accounting Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society Outstanding Educator Award and its Life-Time Achievement Award, the Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Ledger & Quill Award of Merit, and the Ledger & Quill Teaching Excellence Award. He was named Educator of the Year by the American Institute of CPAs, Accountant of the Year for Education by the national honorary society Beta Alpha Psi, and Outstanding International Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from DePaul University.

Marian Powers received her B.S. degree from Chicago State University and her Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, she has taught financial accounting at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Internationally recognized as a dynamic teacher in executive education, she specializes in teaching nonfinancial managers how to read and understand internal and external financial reports, including the impact of international financial reporting standards (IFRS). Her current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. Her research has been published in leading journals. Her textbooks, coauthored with Belverd E. Needles, Jr., are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including the Textbook Excellence Award and the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. She has also coauthored three interactive multimedia software products. She currently serves on the Board of the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois and is immediate past-chair of the Board of Governors of the Winnetka Community House. She is a member of International Association of Accounting Education and Research, and Illinois CPA Society. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois CPA Society, the Educational Foundation of Women in Accounting, and both the national as well as Chicago chapters of ASWA.

Susan V. Crosson received her B.B.A. degree in economics and accounting from Southern Methodist University and her M.S. degree in accounting from Texas Tech University. She is currently teaching in the Goizueta Business School at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Until recently, she was the Accounting Faculty Lead and Professor at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. She has also been on the faculty of the University of Florida; Washington University in St. Louis; University of Oklahoma; Johnson County Community College in Kansas; and Kansas City Kansas Community College. She is internationally known for her YouTube accounting videos as an innovative application of pedagogical strategies. In recognition of her professional and academic activities, she was a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA), an Institute of Management Accountants' Faculty Development Grant to blend technology into the classroom, the Florida Association of Community Colleges Professor of the Year Award for Instructional Excellence, and the University of Oklahoma's Halliburton Education Award for Excellence. Currently, she serves as President of the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum section of the AAA. Recently, she served as a Supply Chain Leader for The Commission on Accounting Higher Education which published "Pathways to a Profession" Charting a National Strategy for the Next Generation of Accountants. She has also served on various committees for the AICPA, Florida Institute of CPAs, and the Florida Association of Accounting Educators.

Great intro to accounting

I liked reading this book for my accounting 101 class. The text is clear, well organized and well written. The typography makes liberal use of color, which makes reading _much_ easier when compared to a monochrome textbook. There are copious examples, illustrations and exercises. The book comes with a workbook (purchased separately) which contains template pages to write in your answers (trust me, you will need it). All chapters are grounded in current reality -- the authors make a point of tying the concepts to real-life situations.
On the cons, the 2002 edition deals with 2000 data -- their production process needs to be speeded up.
I think that a thorough review of this text will give the reader an excellent start in basic accounting.

Principles of Accounting - 7th Edition is a very elaborate book introducing accounting guidelines. Over 1000 pages of all levels of learning from begginer to advanced. It includes transparencies in some portions to make understanding statements very easy!

About the Author

Grandmaster Paul van der Sterren has won the Dutch Championship on two occasions, and in 1993 reached the Candidates stage of the World Chess Championship. He is an internationally renowned chess writer and editor: he was one of the founding editors of New in Chess, for whose Yearbooks he has contributed more than 150 opening surveys.

Outstanding

Without a doubt this is the best opening book to start with, and possibly the only one you might need for quite a while. Oh how I wish this had been available when I started out. What's the first thing a beginner does (ignoring all advice)? He starts surveying all the openings to find a few that he likes (and then changes his mind repeatedly). Before this book that involved buying a book on each opening, at great expense, both of money and time. That's no longer necessary - you can buy this one and get all you need for that purpose. It does expect some experience, but no more than any opening book does.

The book reminds me alot of Watson's Mastering the Chess Openings, except that it's much broader and less deep. It's far less selective and sophisticated than Watson, but it's not superficial at all given the target audience. It gives very good explanations of the general themes, historical development, and early move orders of pretty much every opening you could want, although it does have a strong focus on mainlines. For a beginner or intermediate, this book will give you enough theory to get started - your first half dozen moves with some deviations - but not enough to distract you from tactics and endgames. Coaches should love it. I'm sure they would tell you it's all you need until you are an expert.

The book is targeted at non-Masters. It's perfect for beginners to intermediates - I would say this is an essential book for beginner to Class C. Higher class players would still get a lot of value as a reference for unfamiliar openings they encounter and for broadening their repertoires, but I suspect an Expert would get diminished value from it. It has 450 some pages of large page size and has a huge amount of prose for each bit of analysis.

I bought this expecting to be disappointed by superficiality, but I was wrong. After the fact, it's hard to imagine this book hasn't existed until now. Thank you Grandmaster van der Sterren. Thank you Gambit.

Update: I find myself immersed in this thing all the time - it's addictive. I defy anybody in the target audience to read about their favorite opening and not learn something.

A modern version of "The ideas behind the chess openings"

This book is a miracle. It's fills a gap between more simple opening encyclopedia like Seirawan's "Winning chess openings", Collins "Understanding the chess openings" and specific opening books. This book is in fact a modern and a more advanced version of Ruben Fines "The ideas behind the chess openings". And lower rated chess players (below 1800) should understand the chess opening plans, rather than memorizing openings.

Many chess players (improvers and club players) have bought a book on a given opening, for later find that opening not suitable for them, a waste of money. So in the beginning of your chess career, you should instead buy only one book.

This book!

As an example, this book will probably give you the same introduction and plans in the Sicilian opening, as Emms "Starting Out-The Sicilian", "Fundamental chess openings" contains almost 60 pages with plans and information about the Sicilian opening. That's more than enough for player rated below 1800.

Say goodbye to shelves of chess books

This book is outstanding in every way (apart from the awful 'FCO' title) and provides substantial coverage of ALL chess openings. It addresses both understanding and specific moves and gives lots of unusually well written explanation. In addition it is, I think, superior to comparable alternatives. For example: Watson is far less comprehensive (despite 4 vols), has big gaps e.g. Petroff, and his coverage is both uneven and less practical; Djuric et al is far less deep (despite 4 vols); Collins, though good and comprehensive, is considerably shorter and less focused on understanding; Kallai, though good, is focused primarily on moves; Fine is hopelessly out of date and, in addition, not good. Sterren's opening book is a marvel which makes shelves of my introductory opening titles redundant.

Very powerful book

I just finished reading this book and while it does talk about country living, there is just so much more to this book then just that. It explains about what we need to be doing to get this message out and how we are to be prepared for those coming into the message. Hint....We all need to have a city of refuge. WAnt to know what that means? Read the book! Very powerful and very thought provoking.

This is a book to keep and reread. It is not new, but it is, for each day and each year we live we are planning and preparing for the future in one way of another. Easy to read...tho tough to understand all the medical nomenclature...have to go back to medical manuals but the Illustraions are good and they bring back in reality what we are trying to do to help injured athletes.

Dr. Ghaemi is one of the foremost researchers, along with Goodwin, in the area of bipolar disorder. While this book is aimed at the professional audience, it is filled with nuggets of practical information, and provides the patient with an understanding of a rational approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder, including drugs, dosing, side effects, and psychotherapeutic treatment. It is concise and to the point.

An exceptionally concise and coherent handbook which would appear to leave no room for misinterpretation or misdirection in the course of clinician reaching the diagnosis of a mood disorder. In particular, the full bipolar spectrum is propounded magnificently and with great clarity. This is a manual which is written for a professional audience, and therefore I believe the educated lay-reader will benefit significantly from reading this material over any similarly oriented mainstream press. I have, personally, found this book extremely helpful, and I would recommend it wholeheartedly as the most practical and readable book I have ever encountered on the subject of mood disorders.

most useful book in the mood disorders field

This book is very useful...most than anyone in this field. I've working as a clinician and researcher in the area of mood disorder for almost 10 years and I haven't found anything like this book before.
It is precise, with clinical vignettes of real patients for almost every chapter. the author doesn't have fear to gives us his point of view about diagnostics, treatment and the last evidence about mood disorders.
Despite my experience in the field I found that each chapter has something fresh, new.
In the second edition, Ghaemi includes all the new evidence given by the latest and largest clinical trials: STAR*D for depression and STEP-BD for bipolar disorder, and he did this is in a really concise and easy-to-read way.
Not only for medical students or psychiatry residents but also for experts in the field, this book could be a great fresh air over the windows of their daily clinical practices.

Wonderful new book on Disasterous All-Time Worst NBA team...the 9-73 Philadelphia 76ers from 1972-73!

Very interesting new book out on disasterous season of '72-73 Philly 76ers. Everything was set - an na�ve owner (Kosloff), untested & overawhelmed Coach (Poor Roy Rubin) and amateur GM (Dejardin). Amazing they had to advertise in local Philly Inquirer classified section for this NBA Head Coach job! Yes 76ers were undermanned (a few yrs from their reknown legendary '67 Championship team) but they had some solid parts. Problem was no "go to guy" (Billy Cunningham had jumped to ABA Carolina Couagars), no legitimate Big Man (Chamberlain traded to Lakers after feeling team reneged on his contract). Then the ensuing trades...boy what a disaster they were, often lopsided. To add salt to the wound, the Seattle Super Sonics literally "stole" John Brisker from them and even there they got screwed by the league office.

As a longtime knowledgable NBA & Philly fan, I often search for the rare sports book that tells me something informative/new that I didn't already know. This book was great...literally took you back to the early '70s after Jack Ramsey had left (and gutted the team with some of his own poor moves as GM but also rightfully criticized ownership for not being committed to winning). The author (Charley Rosen) takes you thru pre-season into the season....game by game, detailing how under-manned and undercoached the team was. Along w/crippling trades and disrespect to the final remaining player of the '67 Title team (Hal Greer) this team must have been painful to watch. A GREAT read that I'd definitely recommend...best new Philadelphia 76ers to come along in awhile. Great gift for upcoming holidays for that longtime fan who'll appreciate how rock bottom this once proud franchise became before becoming bona fide "A" team, beginning in '73 drafting Doug Collins, acquiring ABA star George McGinnis in '75 and then the SuperStar himself (Dr J) in '77. Amazing how this team went from 2nd tier players to bunch of All-Stars in literally 4-5 yr timeframe. Complete transformation that was prompted by new ownership (in '76 Fitz DIxon purchased team for $8m) and new/disciplined Head Coach (Gene Shue).

As a lifelong fan of the Sixers and author of "Season of the 76ers" about the 1967 NBA title team, I cannot believe the number of errors in Rosen's book. Who edited this mess? The 76ers beat the San Francisco Warriors in 67, not 'Golden State'. And it's Rick Barry, not RICH Barry. And it's Dave Zinkoff not Dave ZinCoff. And you couldn't go to the Temple U. Urban Archives and find one picture of Rubin....or maybe even two? Or a team photo, even? The entire morgue of the defunct "Bulletin' is sitting right there. I give it a one star pity rating. The title of this book matches the work done to create it....nuff said.

A book on one of the worst teams in sports history

It isn’t often that one can find a book on losing teams or seasons so when I saw that a book was written on one of the worst teams in professional sports history, I was happy to obtain a copy for review. From the description, I was hoping to be entertained while reading the book and to learn a few things about the team.

That hope was partially fulfilled in Charlie Rosen’s recap of the 1972-73 season of the Philadelphia 76ers, a season in which they only won 9 of 82 games held the record for the worst season in the NBA until the Charlotte Bobcats had a worse season in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. The hope to be entertained while reading the book was met, while the information in the book was not newly published or insightful. This despite the interviews Rosen conducted with several players.

The stories of what some of the players would say about coach Roy Rubin were funny as well as some of the antics of both coach Rubin and some players. Those anecdotes made good reading between game recaps. Those were short and read much like the box scores in the daily newspapers. While these allowed the reader to keep up with the progress of how poorly the team was performing, it did make the book feel more like a long newspaper article instead of a book.

The other disappointing aspect of the book for me was the errors that were in the book that didn’t require research or fact checking to point out. The most glaring of these was on the inside cover flap, where the coach of the team for the first 51 games of the season, Roy Rubin, was printed as “Lou Rubin.” There were two others I caught right away that were not about the 76ers, but still ones that even casual fans might catch. One was the name of Hall of Fame player Rick Barry, who was called “Rich” and the name of the team the 76ers defeated in the 1967 NBA Finals. That team was called the “Golden State” Warriors in the book, but they were known as the “San Francisco” Warriors at that time. These type of errors are the type that good editing would catch.

Between the errors and the style of writing in the book, this proved to be a disappointment to me as it was one I was eager to read. It does merit two stars for the entertainment aspect of the book. This book would be recommended only for a reader just wants to read it for entertainment and not for research or history.

What to expect when starting the Gerson Therapy

This is a terrific book for a Gerson Therapy newbie. It honestly talks about the amount of work and dedication needed to succeed on the Therapy, the hours of prep, juicing, shopping, transport and food storage, as well as the expected and wonderful results. The author, like most newbies, is completely overwhelmed at first, but within a few months, the whole process becomes routine, and even comforting. The food, initially unusual because of the lack of salt and other toxic flavorants, also becomes very appetizing because of the lack of toxicity, and you begin to taste the food, not the salt or sugar. Then the author started experimenting with completely acceptable foods, photographs and recipes included, that made my mouth water just thinking about them! So, here's what to expect in terms of work, need for help, progression towards normality, and eventually robust good health from the Therapy, and a whole bunch of mouth-watering recipes while you're at it.
Ms. Bairstow writes with self-deprecating humor and bares her feelings of elation, despair, exhaustion and relief, occasionally eliciting laughter, tears, recognition and kinship with every other Gerson patient ever!

An amazing companion book for anyone involved with or wanting to better understand the life of a Gerson Person. It's like having an experienced buddy showing me the ropes with daily practices, great recipes and photos too! This is not a replacement for the actual Healing the Gerson Way by Charlotte Gerson but again, it is an exceptional and beneficial companion book! All of this, and proceeds go to supporting such an amazing cause that supports people choosing to move beyond cancer with the Gerson Therapy. Six stars!!!

Simply Simply Awesome -Be or Get Whatever You Want - A Recipe for Reality

There are a zillion self help book, but for whatever reason, this one gave me HOPE.
I noticed a difference in almost all aspects of my life when I began to practice various techniques
that are described by Dr. Micheal J. Williams in this book.

As Emerson says, the only good in the universe is coming to you from your own field of corn.
The way for you to get rich is a way unique to you alone.

This book will guide you to finding that way, which lies within your very core and has everything to do with being most uniquely yourself.

The fundamentals of this book are/have been around for centuries but sometimes you need a reminder. I firmly believe that you attract what you believe. If you fear something on a consistent basis, the very thing you fear will come to fruition. That's the underlying message. This book helped me reprogram my thoughts. It's karma on another level and you can't be mad with that.

You see, as simple as it is to get what we want out of life, through various techniques it teach us how to overcome all of our past conditioning, all of our negativity, and all of the bad habits we have spent a lifetime to form. It's very simple, but it is anything but easy! This book will help you to condition your thoughts to break your inertia and get rid of bad habits of thought.

Sometimes when I started to feel down I would open the book anywhere and read 1 page and I would feel better right away. It talked about doing things that were do-able. And it feels so much better to feel good about life than sad. I loved this book so much that after buying a single copy, I bought 5 more copies, and gave away as a gift to some of your friends. It's the kind of book to keep at your bedside and re-read whenever you find yourself needing a lift.

Many situations in my life have changed for the better and I believe "the real secret" coming into my life in the form of prosperity, success, peace and happiness. I highly recommend this book to everyone and even to high school students so they can start early to create their dreams into realities.

Rock Solid Advice and Principles

As a business owner I am always looking for self-help books to make me a better person and keep my mind in tip top shape. I also might add I am a huge fan of books on the subject of "Law of Attraction." I know there are many skeptics and critics alike. It is to be expected. It is certainly one of those topics that unless you have witnessed it for yourself, it can be pretty hard to grasp. I think everyone should take a chance on this book and witness the Law of Attraction at work. It will change your life for the better. As for this book, it's one of the better ones I have read. In this book Dr. Williams will explain how to get what you desire from your subconscious mind and through your conscious mind be able to obtain what you desire. It does work if you take the time to read the book and apply the principles.

Poor spelling and no new information

I had a hard time believing this author from the atrocious spelling in the book. Plurals were missing on many words and page after page had missing words and misspelled words. I read a few chapters of this and decided to give the book away. There is nothing new in this book that has not been written elsewhere a thousand times. There are many books out there on the law of attraction, and I am beginning to suspect that the subject is attracting cranks, Kooks and crooks. I suggest you stick with the old school writers on this subject, like Rhonda Byrne, Deepak Chopra and even Norman Vincent Peale. A lot of people are rushing to this Law of Attraction concept to make a buck. The first Law of Attraction teacher was Siddhartha, the Buddha, who said "Everything is the result of your thought" Then Jesus comes on the scene 500 years later and says, "Pray to your Father, believing that you have already received what you prayed for, and they will be added unto you." The idea that your attitude determines your reality was probably hit upon in the caves in France over 30,000 years ago. Affirmations, holding an attitude of gratitude, being a positive individual and expecting the best from life....it's all been explained and it does work. A man who can't write a book with descent spelling, and repeats worn our information, is not going to be able to lead you to health, or wealth. Good luck in your search.
