Lisa Kroese learned the ins and outs of estate liquidation starting in 1995 working in the painting department at a regional auction house. She has over 18 years of appraisal and liquidation experience and has helped sell and appraise millions of dollars worth of personal property. She is known as “The Estate Mama.” She combines her love of researching family heirlooms with her drive to solve problems and help others. Her company, Expert Estates LLC, conducts over 25 estate liquidation sales each year, and has hundreds of appraisal and consignment clients. Lisa also runs EstateFusion.com, a website for estate liquidation business owners. She is focused on consulting and helping others in growing and developing their own estate sale empire. About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean’s Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School’s finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

corporate finance book

I ordered this book for my finance class. I recieved the book in an excellent condition and delivery time was very reasonable. I also got an excellent deal on the book since it is an older version , but the teacher is okay using an older version since there weren't a lot of changes between the new edition and the old one. This is the sixth week of classes and I am cvery happy with the book.

Incredibly Comprehensive and Stimuating

"The Book Before Printing" by David Deringer is more than a book for bibliophiles: it is a mind-bogglingly comprehensive history of the roots of our common intellectual culture. From the oldest fragment of an Egyptian book c.2600 BCE, through clay tablets, papyrus, leather and parchment scrolls, to codices (that is, books as we have come to know them) in the early centuries of the Common Era, from prehistoric and non-literate symbolic/memnonic schemes, through early writing systems of Africa and Asia, to alphabets and scripts, Diringer examines every bit of evidence that was available up to the early 50's, when the book was written, to reveal archeological, cultural, linguistic, and religious trends through the millenia, and how scribes functioned, in their various settings, to bring us what remains of of distant literary past. He delves into the remotest corners of the globe for unexpected insights and manuscripts. Illustrations are abundant and well-described. I can only wonder what an edition updated to include all the most recent discoveries would be like. Probably huge! But even as it is,this book is a goldmine of information, and a feast for the mind.

An Exceedingly Convenient Reference!

The chief value of this work is in its collection of photographs of rare and unique manuscripts and its mass of empirical data; therefore this effort of Dr. David Diringer - 'THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING: Ancient, Medieval, and Oriental (c.1953, 1982), becomes a nice compendium of evidence rather than a plausible theory of the development of the modern book.
Indeed this author's use of the word 'book' to designate any written material is a source of ambiguity as Dr. Diringer further refined his definition of a book to only the written word found "on perishible material such as wood, leather, or papyrus" (p. 48). So according to this author, only the written word found on clay, rolls, scrolls, leather parchments, linen, and waxed boards up to and including the codex are books - but not stone tablets, cave etchings, monument markings or metal stampings.
Though other studies begin their histories of the book with the codex (e.g. THE CODEX by Dr. Roberts; and THE BIRTH OF THE CODEX by C. H. Roberts), this author's extension of his book definition back to the furthest reaches of human civilization had inadvertently provided the reader with such a broad survey of data that few students will not be instructed by the many well chosen photographs of the rare and ancient manuscripts the author collected to use as examples of books.
In fact, the sheer volume of the photocopied documents almost compelled a reader to turn another page. In chronological order, each photocopy of a scroll, parchment, or codex coincided with Dr. Diringer's explanation of a period in a country's ancient history in which that document was produced. (This is a point where the author's expertise in writing tended to displace his main theme of book history). Yet some documents have achieved such a mythical quality, as 'Beowulf' or the 'Iliad' that it is striking to see a clear, legible photocopy on a following page.
Dr. Diringer made his work further interesting by juxtaposing several copies of ancient manuscripts for either penmanship, language, material, or size comparison. This is exceedingly convenient as the author provided a quick reference of distinguishing artifact features; such as: "National Hands" (p. 286) of 7th century Merovingian with the Visogothic cursive; and the 9th century Roman minuscule with the 10th century Benevendon script. The author provided a clear view of such esoteric documents as: the Lipit-Ishtar Law Code (4,500 B.C.); the Codex Sinaitus (4th century), and the earliest Japanese written document - the 'Shotoku Taishi (573 a.d.). Thus the mere perusal of THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING will become a learning experience as the bibliophile might discover a rare document containing an alphabet or language (or the existence of a race) new to his studies. The sheer beauty and antiquity of some of these manuscripts, such as 'The Book of Kells', or the 15th century illuminated copy of 'Chaucer', and the clay Summerian tablet of the 'Hammurabi Law Code' written in cuneiform, are magnificent.
Originally published as THE HAND PRODUCED BOOK (c. 1953); THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING is not so much a history of the book as it is many histories of the written word. Containing few mistakes (I found one spelling error on page 75; and the original title is still extant on top of each text page) Dr. Diringer had produced an excellent and valuable reference tool for the general reader as well as the scholar. If you need to choose a subject topic for an English, History, Archaeological, or palaeological dissertation then THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING might help you in that choice. So even if you don't believe that a scroll is a book, Dr. David Diringer's work is still worth reading.

For bibliophiles and bibliomanes

This is a reprint of Diringer's "The Hand-produced Book". If you like books, you will LOVE this. You will beat yourself on the head and say, "Where has it been all my life?"
Diringer wrote "The Alphabet" and "The Illuminated Book", as well. All of these are easily accessible to the educated layman, and each is a rollicking good time. Alphabet and Illuminated are out of print. I found each of the 3 titles through the interlibrary loan program, but it would be a groove to actually own them.
Diringer is erudite, with a charming style. The illustrations in all the books are excellent.

Good high-level overview

This book presents a general overview of OO design. As the back cover says, it is not aimed at the pure developer but more at the manager or systems-level designer/team leader. It would also make a good textbook for an "Introductory to OO design" class.
Two example situations are detailed - one a real-time system and the other a typical data-oriented system. While the analysis of each is thorough and well detailed, I think Mr. Yourdon wasted time by comparing different notational conventions.
Overall I liked the book, but I felt that more detail could have been included without alienating the intended high-level audience.

A great resource for C# devs looking to do iPhone development

If you need to get up to speed with Monotouch, the framework to help you build iOS apps in C#, then this book will help you be productive in a very short space of time. I really like the recipe/cookbook format as it means I can dip in and out easily, just concentrating on what it is I'm trying to achieve at that point in time without having to wade through lots of extra text to find the good stuff.

It's easy to read and, quite importantly, uses XCode 4 which makes a big difference as there were some major changes over earlier versions which make other Monotouch books look a bit dated and sometimes harder to follow by comparison, though they all have something to offer. This book touches on a wide range of topics and even covers some of the newer iOS 5 features such as Twitter integration.

In short, if you like to develop in C#, and want to write iPhone apps then this book is a worthy investment. Highly recommended.

"iOS Development Using MonoTouch Cookbook" by Dimitris Tavlikos (ISBN 978-1-84969-146-8) by Packt Publishing as the title suggests is the collection of over 100 how-tos and recipes on how to program for iOS with MonoTouch. MonoTouch is technology developed by Xamarin on top of Mono Project (port of Microsoft .net framework to non-Microsoft platforms).

Initially during reading styling might cause some confusion. Namely each recipe consists of (among the others) "How to do it" and "How it works" sections. "How to do it" section explains in form of the numbered list steps necessary to accomplish task and "How it works" explains the internals of those steps sometimes in the form of numbered list, but not corresponding to list in "How to do it" and sometimes in textual free-form. When explaining in the form of numbered list smaller off-by-one mistakes happened like on page 50 where item no. 4 explains code in item 3.

Generally for experienced c# and .net programmer those imperfections should not make a big difference, because the book is exactly what one might need for transition from Microsoft's .net world over to Mono and then to mobile platforms like MonoTouch and/or Mono for Android.
The book does not dive deep into specifics of Mono, what is and what is not implemented comparing to Microsoft's .net, but gives steps how to use iOS as mobile platform, its features and how to implement those in c# code.

The book starts with introduction to development tools Xcode and MonoDevelop which might be very important for versioned Visual Studio users - especially Xcode usage. This part gives appropriate amount of information to start developing iOS applications.
In following chapters author gives overview and steps how to build UI with Views and View Controllers and these chapters are crucial for classical .net developer, because they explain iOS UIKit which is different from Microsoft .net UI frameworks like Silverlight, WPF, WinForms etc.
Following three chapters deal with bare minimum to start with data management, file system, serialization, database support, displaying data and web services.
Chapters 8 through 10 deal with classical mobile smartphone device features like telephony, multimedia, location services with maps and interaction with device hardware (motion, orientation, accelometer and gyroscope).
Last chapters deal with graphics system and Animations for more compelling UI design and development, multitasking, localization and very important subject deploying iOS apps.
The book covers Xcode 4 and end up with overview of some of the new features of the iOS 5.

The book can be recommended to any experienced developer needing just to start developing for iOS devices without diving too deep into internals, although there are enough tips and hints in "There's more..." part of each receipt allowing reader to look for more information.

It is important to mention that, for developers with this book at their disposal, all code snippets allow one to write code snippets for Visual Studio without much hassle.

Fantastic book

Who knew it could be this easy? This liberating? This empowering? Finally the shackles of XCode's cryptic syntax and 1995-calibre IDE are broken! At last the HTML5/Phonegap monkey is off your back, with it's UI quirks, debugging and native access limitations!

Even though the OS and IDEs have moved on since this book was released, it's still really practical, lucid and manages to find that delicate balance between holding your hand and challenging you.

Highly recommended! However, a strong warning for anyone coming from an Objective-C or HTML5 environment: this book may evoke feelings of intense anger or depression. You can never get that time back.

Something to have in your writing toolbox

Ok, guys and gals, this is not a book to read from cover to cover. This is a book to flip through when your character feels flat.

Instead of staring at a blank page trying to find ways to describe your character, K. S. Everhart has this list that will jump start your fingers and fill that blank page in no time.

You will not sit there and answer every single question. You will find questions that jump off the page and are easy peasy to answer about your character.

This is a list of questions you haven't yet thought of and some may lead to questions not printed out for you.

In this day of many reviewers complaining about flat characters, even if you've already written your story, it is worth flipping through with your character in mind. A carefully worded insinuation in the the right place can add depth to an otherwise lackluster character.

And if you have just an inkling of an idea, creating the character to drop into the story may lead you on paths you never expected. The secret to a good story is to let the character tell it, not force the character into a mold.

My only wish is I kind of wanted to know how to create more of my own questions. I did want to have a way to explain how to create a similar list. But the book is better than what I have seen on the internet so it was worth the money, and some questions could inspire others to write stories amd are good character questions for interviews of characters. It has been a while since I posted a review. I recommend it. It will be helpful even to chart character goals and flaws if you answer the questions or take your time to develop the story you have written more deeply. It would help in thspat respect for revising and maybe even in the process. I have but some of these, on backstory questions.
