About the Author

Peter Westwood has been a teacher in primary, secondary and special schools, but has also spent more than thirty years as a teacher educator and researcher in colleges and universities. He has awards for excellence in teaching from Flinders University in South Australia and from the University of Hong Kong.

About the Author

Michael T. Brannick earned his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from Bowling Green State University in 1986. He is currently associate professor in the Psychology Department at the University of South Florida. He teaches a graduate seminar in job analysis. His research interests include research methods and teams.

Edward L. Levine earned his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from New York University in 1970. He is currently professor and chair of the Psychology Department at the University of South Florida. His research interests include job analysis, personnel selection, control in organizations, and self-efficacy. Dr. Levine is certified as a diplomate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Morgeson is an Associate Professor of Management in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University.� Dr. Morgeson received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Purdue University.� He teaches, conducts research, and consults across a range of areas in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior, including leadership, work analysis and design, work teams, organizational surveys, and personnel selection and staffing.

Good practitioners guide

This is a very comprehensive, yet succinct review of job analysis techniques and methods. The authors provide useful advice, references to other sources, and easy to understand guidance to conducting job analysis. The authors outline the different ways of conducting a job analysis and provide useful guidelines based on the purposes of the job analysis. If you are interested in job analysis, read this book!

Don't feel prepared for the test after reading this.

Very wordy, sometimes takes many sentences to make a point when it would have been much clearer in one single statement. Its almost like a conversation style on a very boring topic. There is a lot of useful information but I would really like to see it better organized and more succinct. It is a business topic and should really be written with a little of the brevity usually found in business material.

The organization is also confusing- for instance, there are two chapters on worker-oriented Job analysis types, but no chapter labeled task-oriented types. I am confused as to where the meat and potatoes is on task-oriented J.A.'s. This includes the categorization of types of J.A.'s- it could be much clearer. This includes the sections on Functional Job Analysis, MPDQ, MJDQ, & PAQ. I have read it several times and it is not clear to me where those fall exactly into the types of J.A.'s; perhaps this is due to the difficulty I am having with identifying the information on Task-oriented J.A.'s. In its current state it could really use a web to give a visual of these types of J.A's and related tests or examples.

The index is too brief also and I would have hoped to see definitions in the back, that would have helped make sense of the paragraph-long definitions.

Through his overview of changes in men's fashions from the 1930s ("the height of elegance") to the present, and his discussion of the current styles of suits, shirts, shoes and accessories, the author attains his goal. There are tips on fit and color coordination, recommendations for appropriate wear for different occasions, clothing suggestions for other-than-average figures (playing down a full figure, drawing attention away from long legs, giving the illusion of height to a short man) and drawings that illustrate what Flusser decrees to be the right way to knot a tie or fold a handkerchief. Classic Timelessness

This is a quick, one-day read, but a lifetime keeper for reference.

Mr. Flusser covers all the essentials in detail: suit coats; suit trousers; sport coats; blazers; dress shirts; neckties; handkerchiefs; hose (socks); shoes; hats; and jewelery.

He covers sportswear such as cable-knit pullover sweaters and cardigans very briefly.

Mr. Flusser asserts the lines, look, and feel of all fine mens wear can be traced to the timespan of the 1930s - 1950s. This was the Golden Age of Hollywood when men dressed well (Cary Grant; Fred Astaire; Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.; Adolph Menjou; and England's Edward, Prince of Wales). Mr. Flusser's point is that if you want a suit that will not be out of date in five or ten years, ensure it is grounded in 1930s - 1950s style, with emphasis on the 1930s.

The only thing I disagreed with in the entire book was his reverence for the four-in-hand necktie knot in all settings. This knot is asymmetrical and does not belong in the boardroom or office. It is a knot that is to be worn casually to a club or in some other social setting. The Windsor or Half Windsor should be worn to the office.

This is somewhat a digression, but there is more to fine dressing than just the fabric against your body, or the leather upon your feet. Care must be taken to groom the hair inside your nose, so that it does not protrude outward. The hair on and in the ear must be cut. Nothing looks worse than looking at a man in fine clothes and seeing he has a thick patch of hair growing out of each ear cavity. Andy Rooney eyebrows are also verboten. Hair, beards, moustaches, eyebrows, ears, nose, teeth...all of these must be groomed/maintained properly to accentuate the look of fine clothes. Without these grooming basics in place, no suit is going to make you look good. Mr. Flusser elected not to cover grooming as essential to the "total package," yet he devoted many areas of the book to items that were not strictly related to clothing. I feel it was a mistake to neglect grooming.

Clothes and the Man is now 21 years old. It is as relevant now as when it was written. This book is a timeless masterpiece, fully deserving five stars.

To solve this problem mapmakers have created hundreds of map projections, mathematical methods for drawing the round earth on a flat surface. Yet of the hundreds of existing projections, and the infinite number that are theoretically possible, none is perfectly accurate.

Flattening the Earth is the first detailed history of map projections since 1863. John P. Snyder discusses and illustrates the hundreds of known projections created from 500 B.C. to the present, emphasizing developments since the Renaissance and closing with a look at the variety of projections made possible by computers.

The book contains 170 illustrations, including outline maps from original sources and modern computerized reconstructions. Though the text is not mathematically based, a few equations are included to permit the more technical reader to plot some projections. Tables summarize the features of nearly two hundred different projections and list those used in nineteenth-and twentieth-century atlases.

For its price, an amazingly good book.

About two months ago, I reviewed "Understanding Map Projections" by Melita Kennedy and Steve Kopp. While in certain minor ways this book falls short of Kennedy and Kopp's book, it is generally head and shoulders above it. And while it is true that Snyder's book is almost twice the price of Kennedy and Kopp's book, it is worth it. Other books of comparable value cost much more.
The only negative thing I really have to say about Snyder's book is that he tries to do two different things in it. This book is both a history and a survey of map projections, and what is appropriate for a history may not be best for a survey. In particular, it means that Snyder covers the various projections not in a sensible order (grouping similar types together), but chronologically. Projections popularized, say, in the 19th century are all covered in the same section.
I prefer the organization of Kennedy and Kopp's book, and I think the use of color in that book makes for a more attractive book. But my primary rating of a book on map projections is going to be based on three criteria: (1) Does it cover a large variety of different projections? (2) Does it give illustrations of what they look like? and (3) Does it give formulas or other information by which one can actually construct maps on the projections listed? This book ranks much higher than Kennedy and Kopp's on two of these three criteria (the first and last), and does not fall very far short of it on the remnaining one.
Over a hundred projections (actually, close to twice that many) are treated in this book, from familiar ones to novelty projections that never will be used in a serious atlas. And a large proportion of them are illustrated (though not all, and the ones that are do not use color as in the Kennedy & Kopp book) and either have the formulas for plotting them or are described in terms equivalent to giving formulas (By contrast the Kennedy-Kopp book has almost no formulas, and the descriptions do not allow you to produce them).
If you don't want to spend over $50, this is the one map projection book to buy.

Map projections in history

Excellent historical description of the different map projections used throughout history. This book describes the methods used during various periods of Western civilization. If you are looking for information on the development of map projections and how such things came to be this is a well researched and scholarly compendium of information. An interesting tour from classical times to the twentieth century. The material has been put in a form that makes it accessible to more than just the specialist. Anyone who has an interest in maps would do well in reading this work. The ingenuity of trying to project a globe on a flat surface is revealed here.

An invaluable resource for the amateur cartophile!

I have not yet completed reading this book, but I've skimmed through many parts and done a thorough reading of little bits of it. It has a solid -- if not particularly rich, in terms of details (if it did, the book would be thousands of pages long) -- history, along with many pictures of the projections (a bit austere: just the graticules and the outlines of the boundaries between water and land are shown, but then, that's all that's really needed). It has many useful mathematical formulas for translating latitude-longitude coordinates on the Earth into x-y coordinate on maps of various projections. If you're into map projections, here's where to start. (or, at least that's where I'm starting, and I have no complaints yet!)

In every poetic phrase, Matz outlines and advances a original vision that others in his field may have sensed in glimmers and shadows, but never fully articulated. This study is impressive in both its depth and bredth.

Great book

If you are a fan of Avatar The Last Airbender, collecting the books from the tale of the main characters from Book 2 will definitely be enjoyable to read. These books basically tell the story of the character, in this case Zuko's, from that character's own perspective. Something I really like about these books is that you can read what they are thinking whether if it's their expression after what they hear in a dialogue or when find themselves trying make a chioce. I really like reading what these characters are thinking because that is something you can't see when watching the show. If you are a big fan of Avatar like me, you can't go wrong with collecting these books. They're really worth it.

Its inhabitants are people who were plucked from twentieth-century history at various times and places and left to govern themselves, advised by Mentors whose purpose seems inscrutable. Andrei Voronin, a young astronomer plucked from Leningrad in the 1950s, is a die-hard believer in the Experiment, even though his first job in the city is as a garbage collector. And as increasinbly nightmarish scenarios begin to affect the city, he rises through the political hierarchy, with devastating effect. Thoughtful and thought-provoking piece of “serious” literature - now in excellent English translation

I first read “The Doomed City” in Russian more than twenty years ago, right when it was first published. This book is rightly considered the masterpiece of Brothers Boris and Arcady Strugatsky. And, I was gladdened to finally be able to share this book with my English-speaking friends. This translation is absolutely first class, very precise and spot-on. It follows closely the original written language, and does a fair job of capturing some uniquely idiomatic expressions that are frankly impossible to translate. The book still might pose a serious challenge to an American (or simply Western) reader, for whom some Soviet Russian social mores and traditions might be unfamiliar, and the uniquely sardonic mind-set might be utterly alien.
The book is sardonically dark, in a way that most Western readers may be un-accustomed to. While some Western-written novels like the “High-Rise” by J.G. Ballard, stories by Phillip K. Dick, and, of course, George Orwell “1984” are indeed comparably “dark” in tone, Strugatsky offer us a vision that is not so much action-packed, but uniquely bleak and oppressive, yet somehow also, understandably human, and even wise. There are fantastic elements, but they are used as a setting, not as the main focus of the book, which is always directed at the very real human condition. Overall, I think it is misleading to think of this book as a sci-fi. It is no more a sci-fi novel than J. Ballard’s “High-Rise”. What it is – is a thoughtful and thought-provoking piece of “serious” literature – perhaps the most important Russian novel written in the past fifty years. It joins a fine tradition of Russian literature of Gogol, Tolstoy, and Dostoyevsky, and, similarly, warrants attention and demands to be explored by any well-read person, especially as it is finally available in English.

A Long Lost Strugatsky's Masterpiece in English

(Note: I already reviewed this book on Goodreads, but I thought it would be better to give my review on Amazon since I bought the paperback from it.)

It's a great book, really. Though I do not know if it should belong with the authors' other masterpieces, such as "Hard to Be a God" and "Roadside Picnic," I think everyone would be interested in reading it.

The book is also the longest work than any other Strugatsky's books, as Boris explained in the afterword that it took three years for him and his brother to plan it and finally wrote it for another three years. But it was not published until sixteen years later, due to the dangerous time in the 1970s.

The book contains some allusions of the Soviet Union, where the people behind the Experiments act as the communist government, the City is their playground, and its inhabitants are their guinea pigs. According to the foreword, Dmitry Gluskhovsky, the author of "Metro 2033," relates how the City is like St. Petersburg. He explains that St. Petersburg went through periods of rough time, from the Bolshevik Coup to the Nazi blockade and to the communist regime. He describes that is how the City goes through during the course of the narrative, like the revolution where the farmers started a war against their government for not explaining why the sun could not turn on for the past week.

I would recommend it for anyone who is a Strugatsky fan or a newcomer to read it. This book is very philosophical at the last chapters of the book, and it would leave you surprised at the end.

What a book

To start off, this is truly a great book. A masterwork of science fiction and philosophy, this book probably being the most philosphical of the Strugatskys' works. Dealing with existence and life and what purpose to live is there, it's a fantastic novel, however at times, specifically at two points in the story for me, the philosophy seems to take over completely for a couple pages where the main charcter talks/thinks to himself about the philosophy at hand, with the second part occuring later in the book and resulting in a 2-3 page block of dialouge from the main character. Some may enjoy those ramblings that occur and absolutely love that block of text, for me though the story seemed yo crawl along during that period. Regardless, I thought it was a fantastic boom and enjoyed the realized and developed characters and the well crafted story
