Warren Sande is an Electronic Systems Engineer who uses Python as his favorite "do anything" scripting language at work, and also uses it to help teach people about computers and programming. He holds a degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, as well as a Diploma in Communication Arts from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Carter Sande is a high school student who is passionate about technology. When he's not fixing his school's network and helping his classmates recover lost homework, he likes to ride his bike and write retro video games.

Renew Kids Interest in Creating

I learned programming 20 years ago from the classic Kernighan & Ritchie's "C Programming Language." Hello World follows in that tradition but with what is considered the easiest modern language for beginners to start with, Python. It is written for kids and young adults, but can easily be used by anyone with a passion for learning something new. The book has these nice features:

* Uniquely bundles everything you need to follow along with the book in one installation package on their website. In my experience, developing software is about 60% configuration (painful) and 40% programming (pure joy). Taking the pain out of the equation helps remove obstacles that discourage first time programmers.
* Cartoons with questions or explanations. These visual items complement the text and help stimulate the brain.
* Code examples use different color fonts for keywords and have plenty of sticky note type comments on what the code is doing.
* Suggested exercises at the end of each chapter. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, Practice, Practice. How do you gain a deep understanding? Play, experiment, change things in the examples and see what happens!
* Easy to follow analogies. "...a class definition isn't an object. It's just the blueprints. Now let's build a house."
* Game development chapters to build on kids interest and get them creating rather than just consuming. The future belongs to creators in all fields, even if they do not become programmers.

I also have the excellent book "Python for Kids". I would give the advantage to "Hello World" due to the easy to grasp analogies. It is so important when learning something new to be able to relate to something you already know. The author of Hello World was teaching his co-author, who just so happens to be his son, how to program, so together they made an enjoyable, easy to follow book.

Note of disclaimer: since I volunteer my time to provide chapter comments of programming books while they are being written, the publisher gave me a free e-book for Hello World in exchange for a review. I volunteer at a local elementary school with disadvantaged students and I have always wanted to teach the kids programming, so I jumped at the chance.

* Jetbrains Pycharm - free community edition Integrated Development Environment. The standard Python installation comes with IDLE which is fine and easy to use. The advantage of PyCharm is you get easier support for keeping track of multiple files, auto-complete, and professional level powerful software. The only downside is increased complexity, so you would need a programmer in your household to help configure it for you, remember the 60%?
* StackOverflow - If you get stuck, you can go to the author's web site, or Stack Overflow, the absolute best site for asking programming questions or finding your questions already answered.

Great intro book for kids

Purchased this for my almost 8 year old to start teaching him computer programming. Gave it to him today, and he loved it. It's full of cartoons and color pictures. He was having fun and giggling as he made the computer say and do different things, and then got excited about programming his first game (chapter 1). He's now staying up to read the book by the light of a Coleman lantern because I told him it's lights out time.

One thing to be aware of is that the book is Python 2. I was more interested in a book to teach how to program than a specific language so this is fine for me, but if you want Python 3 this isn't for you. However, the book seems well laid out so far starting with fun stuff to get interest, doing a few chapters of actual lessons and then a programming a game that uses the lessons. It assumes no programming knowledge of any kind but for that seems fairly complete in what it covers (as least as far as the core python, don't expect an exhaustive detail of every add on package, though it does hit some guis and a little numpy).

The publisher also offers the pdf free with purchase of the print book. And they have an installer on their website which installs all the packages used in the book of the same version the book used, so it's easy to make sure version differences don't slow your kiddo down (they'll need to learn to deal with those, but one thing at a time).

In short, great well-written intro book for kids.

A very useful how-to guide

I am one of the “Other Beginners” mentioned in this book’s subtitle. I have taken a couple of Python classes, and I have worked my way through a couple of Python how-to books. And I am pleased that I have added this new edition of Hello World! to my library.

I am not a professional programmer. Just a hobbyist. But I enjoy doing some coding in Python 2.X and Python 3.X. And I often need to look up some short examples of code or a clear explanation of how a particular function works. I especially like how this book’s new edition includes notes and an appendix that focus on some key differences between Python 2.X and Python 3.X.

Hello World 2nd Edition is written at a 12-year-old’s reading level. I am quite a bit older than that. So I don’t have to struggle too much to comprehend what I am being told and shown about something that seemed fairly complicated at first, such as variable nested loops.

Bottom line: This book is helping me learn more about Python. And it soon may help me help a couple of grandkids who will be taking programming classes in school.

Enlightening "cheat sheet" for understanding the dynamics of Japan's growth dilemma

When I went to live in Japan in the late 80's, it was a time of kokusai-ka - internationalization -- and economic robustness and I was very hopeful about the possibilities for entrepreneurship and women going forward.

In the years since I left (in the early 90s), I've only had a vague sense of the reasons why Japan didn't continue on that linear path of growth. So I found the frank discussion between maverick thinker Hiroshi Mikitani and his father about what Japan needs to do to be competitive again encouraging and enlightening. They've provided a helpful framework for getting up to speed on the dynamics of the Japanese economy, education system and government bureaucracy and -- thanks to their connections to prominent economists/businessmen and Hiroshi Mikitani's involvement in the Industrial Competitiveness Council -- insights into some of the debate that goes on behind-the-scenes. (Even if you're familiar with the country's dynamics, it's still fascinating to hear the opinions of one of Japan's most successful entrepreneurs.)

An interesting perspective on Japanese international competitiveness.

Hiroshi explains in an innovative format, using the acquired wisdom of his father, the globalisation issues facing not only Japan but all countries. I believe he is correct on almost all points he raises. I also believe his solutions are spot on. If you are interested in international business this book should be read.

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally. It's not made for drinking. It can give you headaches for a months to years and is a mutagen, which means it should be handled like a carcinogen.

Dan Millman has easily been one of the biggest influences in my life.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with philosophical speculation. But let's not mistake conceptual thought for the spiritual practice of everyday life. After all, what does it serve to know whether angels wear earrings if we can't hold a regular job or maintain a long-term relationship? What good does it do to pray like a saint or meditate like a yogi if we are unchanged when we open our eyes? What good to attend a place of worship on Saturday or Sunday if we lack compassion on Monday?"

Dan Millman has easily been one of the biggest influences in my life.

I was given his book Way of the Peaceful Warrior almost exactly a decade ago when I was a 25- year old CEO running my first business (eteamz.com) during the dot com boom of the 90's. The market had just crashed and we were about to go from 45 employees to 14 before selling the biz. Dan's wisdom helped navigate that juncture of my life... and many since!

In fact, he was the first author I loved so much that I went out and read all of his stuff. Some of my favorites (that I think you'll also dig) include: Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Everyday Enlightenment (of course), Body Mind Mastery, The Life You Were Born to Live and Living on Purpose.

Where Christians use the Bible, I use Dan Millman's Everyday Enlightenment

Dan takes you through a journey that hits on every aspect of the human life. He thoroughly explains his thoughts and ideas on how to deal with everyday existence. Yet at the same time, many of his ideas are ideas you have to find for yourself. That may sound a bit confusing, but Dan's main premise is not for you to trust him, but to learn to trust yourself. After reading gateway 11,"Awaken your heart," it was amazing how much better I started communicating with everyone, especially my father. He culminates the book with a practice that has, over time changed my life. I am very grateful to Dan and consider him a mentor even though we've never met. I hope you will give this book a chance, I think it can make a big difference in your life as well.

Millman does not disappoint.

I'm a Millman fan. I became hooked when I read No Ordinary Moments 15 years ago - and completely changed the trajectory of my life.
I recently picked up this book - the timing was perfect. I've been reading (studying) each section - taking up to 2 weeks before leaping to the next one. Very powerful tools if you're doing inner work and seeking authenticity.
He has a great way of defining fundamental spiritual principles - making them simple, practical and useful. Some reviewers might say there is nothing new here - I feel that's because fundamental truths do not change. Fundamental truths are built upon and 'rediscovered' based on personal growth 'spurts' - deep pools that each person must explore in their own way and in their own time.
This book has served as an inspiration for self-exploration at a time when I was seeking more. Highly recommended.

One Woman's Vengeance

As much as a revolting assault, Nora Hawks was stripped of all social graces and dignities. She was peeled like an onion until the only thing that remained was the white-hot determination to pay them back. Not just exterminate them; let them know death was reaching out. That vengeance became Nora Hawks. It was her thoughts, actions and dreams. It's a story that builds the reader's need to know how she does it.

Feminist meets pistol-packing mama

I have to admit that, as a Women's Studies professor, I approached this novel with some trepidation. I was intrigued by the idea of a violated woman seeking vengeance on those who raped her and killed her husband, but I was afraid that Nora, the novel's protagonist, might come off as Dirty Harry in skirts. I'm delighted to say that that was not the case at all. I love the way that Nora blows stereotypes of women as nonviolent victims way out of the water.

As a poet I've written a chapbook that bounces off the apocryphal story of Hebrew widow Judith of Bethulia who saved her people on the eve of battle with the Assyrians by seducing their general Holofernes, getting him drunk, and cutting off his head. At readings, I've had audience members object to the idea of violence as a solution and, especially, to the idea of a woman resorting to such violence. I'm as anti-war as the next liberal feminist, but I was--and continue to be--intrigued by instances in which women characters--such as Nora and Judith--who are not raised to be violent resort to taking matters into their own weapon-wielding hands when those in charge (in Nora's case, the law, in Judith's case, the town elders)are apathetic and/or ineffectual.

In addition to thoroughly enjoying Nora as a character, I loved her relationship with Peter, her mentor in shooting and killing. It especially tickled me that what enticed him to come out of retirement and work with her was his desire to learn to cook. His exchanging killing lessons for cooking lessons cracked me up, but I also love the irony of it--that one kind of lesson leads to ending life and the other leads to sustaining it. Kudos also to Miller for resisting the temptation (I assume he was tempted; I would have been) to turn the mentor/mentee relationship into a romance. Instead he shows the possibilities of true friendship between the sexes.

There is much more to be said about the delights of reading this novel, but instead I'll just say READ IT.

Fast, Violent, and Satisfying

I am a writer, outdoor recreationalist, and gender studies scholar, and while I've always liked westerns I read & watch them with an awareness of the cliches and how, so often, the stories and characters don't speak to the issues that interest me most. One of them Dennis hit on--what was it like for a woman back then, one with guts who had to make it on her own in that violent and uncertain man's world? The frontier has long been credited with shaping the distinctly American character--rugged individualism, lover of democracy but vigilante at heart, yearning for the freedom of wide open spaces. Well, even though you couldn't tell this by our literature (or movies), many women have those same values and yearnings. Nora caught my interest right away because here's a woman who had started realizing her dream of a western horse ranch with her husband, when all hell broke loose and knocked them of their horse, so to speak. Yet after everything--gang raped, seeing her husband beaten and shot dead, almost dying herself, and going back east to heal--after everything she is still so in love with the West that she returns. Not just to get vengeance and go back east, or somewhere undecided. So she can--if she survives--try again. The dream is gone, she accepts this, but she will not be run out of the territory. That is one Western trope Dennis gives a new twist to. And there are others.

I like how using the different firearms takes so much work. Not just aiming, but being strong enough to hold them steady long enough. All the real details that most Westerns gloss over. And the gun fight, when it comes, would make Doc Holiday proud. I won't give any details away, but one of my most favorite moments is Elmer's wife. Watch for it. But Peter deserves mention too. His and Nora's awkward and deepening friendship contains sparse dialogue that for the most part doesn't say too much or too little. My favorite scene between the two of them is near the end of the book. Nora knows he likes her, so when his tone turns serious in the talk-before-the-showdown she tenses up. We also think "Don't blow it," and he doesn't. Rather he shows how well he understands her.

My only wish is that the setting played a bigger part. I realize that Nora is preoccupied and don't expect her to "enjoy the scenery," but maybe in the sequel there will be more time for the physical and spiritual beauty of the landscape to come into focus.

I highly recommend this read for those who appreciate westerns but always long for them to be more complicated, like Eastwood's Unforgiven.

The book is lengthy and has a lot of details some of which one may not find necessary but the conversational writing that Alice has employed in penning this book will keep you glued to the book. This is a must read book that walks you through the life of a legend.

A Book for All People

Warren Buffett has interested me for a while now. Of course, everyone knows he is a rich man, but what is interesting is his ability to lead. During my time away, I finished reading this thought provoking book. It is about his life, and his pursuit of wealth and impact in the world. His philosophies are what interests me. He seems to have simple tastes, he has a ethical mindset, though of course, we would probably disagree on some of his stances, but overall, I like his approach to life. I read this book because he has been successful for a long time. What made him not crash and burn like other successful and rich people. The book is interesting because you see his singular focus on understanding businesses and investing. And I believe some of his principles translate to congregational leadership well. One is, trust good people. You have to surround yourself with people who you can trust and are good people. Second, you need to have a bottom to your downside. This is where a lot of churches go wrong. There are changes, but it is too risky, and ultimately fails. Third, be patience, you are not going to get a return quickly, and you need to be patience with people and churches. Fourth, know you will be wrong, but focus on still being right. As leaders, we all make mistakes, but focus not only on the down side, but go for the upside too. There are other lessons that this book dealt with in my context that were helpful too. It is a long read, and it is not a church book, but if you have a interest in this man, and some of his thoughts and background, I truly recommend the book. It was a great read.

Great story, if a bit euphemistic.

I grew up admiring Warren Buffet. I enjoyed this book. It's great story telling about one of the greatest investor of our time. My only issue with this book is it kinda makes Warren out to be a really good guy. Too good. He's a bit of a hypocrite in real life. A bit more balanced story telling perhaps will portray him truer to life.

If you are interested in the topic, THIS is the book for you!

I'm planning a trip to Greenland this summer, the place has always interested me. I read that this man is an essential source. Freuchen does a wonderful job giving us his "adventures" in a brief form without the flowery prose which fills up pages of other bios. He has a wry humor and doesn't take himself too seriously. The first half is all about Greenland and his life there. He gives us a first hand look at the Island and the Eskimos, as one who has little agenda. His later chapters as film director, underground participation, meeting with famous people, provides a fresh look at; the Nazis, Quisling, Danish Royalty, Hollywood moguls, etc. I particularly enjoyed the description of the Danish Underground. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. His description of the Soviets is spot on, which tells me something about his ability to capture what is essential.
I've been reading and read other accounts on Greenland but this is special.

An amazing memoir from one of the toughest

An amazing memoir from one of the toughest, most inquisitive humans to ever have lived. From moving to Greenland and living with the Eskimo and the tales of surviving alone on the ice, to joining the Danish resistance in WWII, escaping from Nazi prisons, Freuchen's story feels like an epic 9 film historical drama by Wes Anderson.

peter freuchen is about as good as it gets

the book itself is exactly as described----very fair purchase price and seller too. seller even acknowledged an old "musty smell" which i kind of like anyway. as for the content--well--for the armchair adventurer, peter freuchen is about as good as it gets. well-written too (notice how he often ends paragraphs with powerful and often amusing transitional sentences). surprisingly frank.
