Love this Author!!

Well if your ready for a change this is the author for you! This a series you won't be able to put down and when you read the last line you'll be searching the internet wondering when her next book is to be released. This a fast paced book with great characters that you will love. Guardians, Angels, Demons, and romance, oh my! Buy it! You'll love it! And be sure to read her book not related to the series, but an excellent read: Cross My Heart.

This book made me cry, laugh, angry and every other feeling I can't tell you how much I loved it. I just loved Seth. It's worth more than 5 stars. It is very well written and I have now gone and got all her other books. I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

OMG WITH ALL THE 5STARS........

I bought this book because it had a ok story line and great reviews.....Once again it was a big mistake just by the reviews given. The first book was pretty decent but not great. Genesis aka Gee can be some what annoying. She a brat, know it all, thinks she is some kind of bad ass, and basically kinda of a bitch. Her great magical power is that she can see into the future. In book two she becomes a Demon hunter and let's see she still gets her ass beat . They train her to fight against demons when she herself is just a human ...this part of the store is a bit crappy at least give some super power or something semi believable. Despite that she comes off cocky. And a bad ass( yea I know I repeated it again cause she was that annoying). Which is dumb because she isn't the is always making good choices and is a know it all wannabe bad ass. The is the theme of the book. Then there is Seth ...can you say whipped much and puppy dog carter just jumps back on that train.They are both ok, but they are so wrapped up in Gee to me it makes them a bit unlikable....idk what book those other people read but I found it a waste of time and money.I keep thinking damn I bought the third book cause I like reading book series, it took me twice as long to finish this book cause it was so bad I stopped several times......I say rethink before buying this book I wish had...just saying

About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett

Jeffrey Bennett holds a B.A. (1981) in biophysics from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.S. and Ph.D. (1987) in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, including more than 50 college classes in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and education. He served 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he created NASA's "IDEAS" program, started a program to fly teachers aboard NASA's airborne observatories (including the recently launched SOFIA observatory), and worked on numerous educational programs for the Hubble Space Telescope and other space science missions. He also proposed the idea for and helped develop both the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the CU-Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. (He is pictured here with the model Sun.) In addition to this astronomy textbook, he has written college-level textbooks in astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics; two books for the general public, On the Cosmic Horizon (Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008); and an award-winning series of children's books that includes Max Goes to the Moon, Max Goes to Mars, Max Goes to Jupiter,and Max's Ice Age Adventure. When not working, he enjoys participating in masters swimming and in the daily adventures of life with his wife, Lisa; his children, Grant and Brooke; and his dog, Cosmo. Megan Donahue

Megan Donahue is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. Her current research is mainly on clusters of galaxies: their contents-dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei-and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received a B.A. in physics from MIT, where she began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, for a thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas. That thesis won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued postdoctoral research in optical and X-ray observations as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScI Institute Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute until 2003, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, and they collaborate on many projects, including this textbook and the raising of their children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon. These days, Megan runs, orienteers, and plays piano and bass guitar whenever her children allow it.

 

Nicholas Schneider

Nicholas Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy, with a focus on the odd case of Jupiter's moon Io. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. Off the job, he enjoys exploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

 

Mark Voit

Mark Voit is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. He earned his B.A. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, and then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before going to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach

at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and was the scientist behind NASA’s Hubble Site. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe. He is married to coauthor Megan Donahue, and they try to play outdoors with their three children whenever possible, enjoying hiking, camping, running, and orienteering. Mark is also author of the popular book Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.

The book is fine, however, the access code did not match the class ID code so had to buy another digital copy for another $93. The book companies and school sure do have a good racket going on....

Nice book, but don't rely on the access code

I was actually pretty surprised that out of all the textbooks I ordered this semester, this one was the most understandable. I'm sure that this is just an overview of what are incredibly complicated theories, but the writing isn't TOO boring and actually explains astronomy in a way that makes sense.

Be careful ordering, though - there are what seems like a billion different editions of this book in addition to a textbook called "The Cosmic Perspective" (no essential) and many places will get ISBN numbers confused, so double check your syllabus to make sure the title matches. Additionally, do NOT depend on the access code enclosed to actually match whatever your online lab is; I wound up having to order one separately because they were not the same.

A Cosmically Good Reference Book!

I'm a professional science writer and curriculum developer who is long out of college. This book is organizer beautifully for conceptually developing planetary geology, geophysics and astronomy on a readable level. Up-to-date with excellent graphics and a nicely done index, it is my go to reference guide. I prefer it over the Internet to help with the "big picture" ideas. I've read other textbooks cover to cover and the organizational flow, coupled with the through chapter development is outstanding. He begins with a page on pedagogy that says it all: Focus on the big picture, work on conceptual ideas, relate the material to what students already know and then idea more obscure details. I've taught for more than 20 years and this is a sound way to impart complex information.

This is the one...

There's a good reason that this is commonly used as an introduction to Balzac: it's one of his best and most focused works (not that I've read them all, of course...). He wasn't a wholly consistent author (and neither would *you* be, had you written 120+ novels)--at times, he can be downright tedious. Not here, though: Old Goriot is a fast read, and utterly gripping.
The character of Goriot is handled quite delicately: Balzac plays mercilessly on our sympathy for an old man victimized by his daughters (intentional shades of King Lear here). It's not a uni-dimensional depiction, however; as Goriot's boundless love seems at times to go beyond the merely paternal--he may be a Christ-figure, but he's certainly not a straightforward one. Of course, the real show-stealer here is Vautrin, the master criminal. As much as Balzac fancied himself a historian, he was really at his most entertaining when he went over the top, as he does here: Vautrin is wonderfully demonic, and one can't but get a kick out of reading him. In contrast to these twin personalities, which tower above anyone else in the book, you have the titular protagonist, Eugene de Rastignac, a perfectly ordinary sort of guy--your archetypical 'young man from the provinces'. He provides a good counterpoint to all the madness going on, and you can't help but like the guy, even if he's not really an extraordinary person.
Anyway: you should read this. Yes--YOU. I mean come on, you really ought to read at least one Balzac in your life. And if you like it, you can go on to Lost Illusions and Cousin Bette. Highly recommended.

An exemplary tragicomedy

Balzac's "Old Goriot" both celebrates and satirizes early 19th Century Parisian society and its idiosyncrasies. In terms of the variety of characters it introduces and the themes covered, it is a novel of incredibly wide scope, written with efficiency and some of the most beautiful prose, at least via Marion Crawford's English translation.
Goriot is an elderly gentleman living in a Paris boardinghouse in 1819. He used to be a prosperous vermicelli merchant, but hard times of late have forced him to pawn off his remaining precious possessions and move into the cheapest room available in the house. Since running afoul of the landlady Madame Vauquer, whose romantic attentions he once spurned, he has become an object of ridicule to the other boarders, due to his shabby clothes and apparent senility.
Most of the novel's action, however, centers around another of the boarders, a law student named Eugene de Rastignac who comes from a modest family. Rastignac's situation and motives are easy for any urban young man to identify with: He is eager to climb into the upper echelons of Paris society, but he finds to his dismay that the fashionable Parisian women are not interested in paupers. His wealthy cousin, Madame de Beauseant, advises him that he must be ruthless to make it in high society. With his cousin's help, Rastignac acquaints himself with two young society matrons, Anastasie, the Countess de Restaud, and Delphine, the Baroness de Nucingen, who happen to be Goriot's daughters.

Goriot's relationship to his daughters provides the basis for the novel. He spoiled them rotten as little girls; consequently, they grew up irresponsible, greedy, and ungrateful. Having married wealthy men, they both seek consolation from their unhappy marriages through reckless spending and extramarital beaus. Despite their faults, Goriot loves and cares for his daughters with something more like a neurotic obsession than warm, paternal devotion. You can't help feel sorry for the guy, suffering from his delusions, selling everything he owns, and living in squalor so that his daughters, who are unable or unwilling to fend for themselves or fight their own battles, can stay financially solvent.

There is an interesting subplot involving another boarder at Madame Vauquer's house, a devilish, unscrupulous fellow named Vautrin who may not be what he initially appears to be. Vautrin knows Rastignac is trying to get his foot in the door of Parisian society and he knows he needs money to do it. He proposes this scheme: Rastignac will marry a poor girl dwelling at the boardinghouse named Victorine; Vautrin will have Victorine's brother killed so that she'll inherit the whole of her father's fortune, which will bring Rastignac into big money and high society, and he can pay Vautrin for collusion. The way Balzac plays out this scenario without letting it become an interference with the main story line of Rastignac's relationship to Goriot's daughters is quite a deft feat of plotting.

Inadequate Translation of GORIOT

The problem here is the translation. Done by Ellen Marriage for the Dent collected edition of Balzac at the beginning of the 20th century, it can be best described as workwomanlike but anachronistic. There are too many stilted passages and archaic word choices of the "Gadzooks" type.

A better choice is Raphael's version for the Nortion series or even Marian Cooper's in Penguin, though it was done 50 years ago.

The yarn itself is one of Balzac's best, though you can find dissenters (Martin Turnell, no fan of Balzac, calls it one of his worst in THE NOVEL IN FRANCE). To be honest, the best of Balzac is not as good as the best of Flaubert, Stendhal, or Proust, but given his ability to keep the reader turning pages in spite of ragged prose and melodramatic excess, GORIOT is still "living literature" and a classic of French literature.

Don't Leave Home Without It

As Director of Neuroradiology at a Harvard teaching hospital for many years, I have been responsible for recommending texts for residents to begin their study of my subspecialty. When this book was first published, it happened to be the year in which our subspecialty offered its own examination for certification. Because I was interested in finding a text to provide a current survey of the field, I bought this book. Little did I know how comprehensive this text was- a true "bang for the buck". The coverage of the field, including neck imaging, is remarkably thorough and up-to-date, considering the current edition is 6 years old.
The only minor deficiency is a paucity of illustrations, but I believe a pictorial work book keyed and correlated to this text has now been published.
What makes this text unique is the authors' wry sense of humor, with "zingers" appearing unexpectedly- they literally wake you up and provide encouragement to finish even the most challenging chapters. The final sections, which include a unique chapter on how to interpret MR and CT images, as well as lists of differential diagnoses, are real gems.
In summary- as Karl Malden said- "Don't Leave Home Without It". The book is small enough to carry, and a valuable resource from which to learn while one works in the radiology reading room.

A good book, but not for people with low attention span...

First of all, this is a good book. It covers most of the topics a 1st year radiology resident needs to know. However, it wanders too much on shallow comments and -supposedly funny- jokes that only distracted me from my study. I'm a person who struggles to keep her concentration, I have a poor attention span, if you will, so when I was reading something complex (as most of the subjects in neuroradiology are) and then the authors ended up with a lame joke, it was as if everything I just read became lost. That may be 'my' limitation, as I mentioned, not a real flaw of the book, but I think people who, like me, need a more 'clasically' structured and 'traditionally' written text, should be warned that this volume of the Requisites series isn't the most adequate to suit their way of study.

Neuroradiology - an excellent review

Neuroradiology is a must for every Radiology resident. It is an excellent introduction to the complex and fascinating subject of neuroradiology. Unlike most medical writing, the book has humor and is "conversational" keeping the reader involved. It covers not only the anatomy and pathology involving the brain and spinal cord, but also the orbit, sinuses, and neck region. Strongly recommend to every radiology resident and any budding neuroradiologist. Awaiting the 2000 edition!

It is a good textbook.

It has many practical and helpful examples in each section. At the end of sections, there are plenty of exercises problems for practicing. All of these make learning such a complex subject much easier and faster. It's a great book for people who need to take exams in ordinary differential equations. It's also useful for engineers who need to refresh basic ODE knowledge.

This textbook was very well written as the contents flows smoothly. Ordinary Differential Equations need lots of practice to master and this book has provided many useful examples to help understand intricate theorems. This book contains many questions and detailed solutions. This was very helpful for studying the subject.�I highly recommend this textbook!

A thorough and well-formed book on ODE's with plentiful fully worked out examples

This textbook is excellent for learning--or reviewing--methods of solving ODE's and their applications. Most textbooks have a limited number of solutions for exercises; Dr. Deng's book, however, not only provides answers for all problems in an appendix, but also provides the detailed step-by-step ways that one may arrive at those solutions, which is of great value to the student. For the price, you cannot go wrong with this book, even if it is not required for a course you are taking or if you are simply looking for a reference in the future to refresh your knowledge when you need it.
