About the Author
Richard Cadena is the author of "Focus on Lighting Technology," technical editor for PLASA, former editor of Pro Lights and Staging News magazine, an Authorized WYSIWYG Trainer, and 20 year veteran of the entertainment lighting industry including stints with two of the world's largest automated lighting manufacturers. He has a background in electrical engineering and electronics, and he is a freelance lighting designer with a portfolio of several major lighting designs and installations and is proficient in WYSIWYG, LD Assistant, and Vectorworks. He has been an instructor of classes in automated lighting technology with the Show Training Network, and a moderator of several lighting panels and seminars at Pro Production and Inspiration trade shows.

great overview for a mid level LD

A great history lesson and general overview of the lighting industry, protocols and components that go into any major LD production.

I come from a musical background, incorporating small scale lighting for live performances and setting up basic DMX fixtures. This book was perfect for what I wanted: a more in depth study of how LARGE scale operations take place, and what kind of options are available in the low-mid level price/scale range.

This is a fairly technical book, but not too technical. I have no formal training in lighting, only what I read on the net, and in manuals. I would recommend this book if your looking to take your small production to the next level. It really lays out options including specific fixture/console names and who are the major players in the industry.
The intro history section was SUPER cool, a great read even for a non-technical individual.

very useful book for the automated lighting technicians

I really like this book because it describes how the moving lights Works, it explains the electrial, electronics, data, mechanics, optics and networks.

Very easy to understand and complete. It's very technical if you don't know about computers and electronics but if you have worked with the moving heads I think it's not a big deal.

The book also has some tips for programming and the lighting design.

Best Book for any parent devestated by suicide.

As I write this review, I am still anxiously waiting for this book to arrive. My only son, Christopher age 17, took his own life 21 years ago. Although we have a huge family, I always felt so lost, broken and alone. I went to support groups. I read everything I could get my hands on. No book could really speak to me and my grief. When I read this many years ago, I began to heal from the hell I was experiencing. I gave the book away. I bought another copy and gave that away as well. It had to get into the hands of other suicide survivors. Just last week, my beloved 20-year old nephew took his own life in a very tragic and traumatic manner. In the early hours I began to search for this book, knowing it had been out of print. I could think of nothing else to give to my brother and his family. I am anxiously waiting for this so that I will have it available for them. Iris Bolton spoke to me. I cried through the entire book because she was speaking my feelings. I began to heal. It was the turning point for me.

I was given the book almost 24 years ago when ...

I was given the book almost 24 years ago when I needed it most and I still didn't want to part with, but when a friend lost her son to depression I wanted her to have the book, so I ordered and gave it to her. I haven't heard from her yet, but I don't expect to hear from her when the pain is still so raw. I hope it explains some of what a person going thru depression feels and explains some of the pain that her son was going thru and what she is going thru now.

This is the tenth volume of a detailed study about the Silmarillion- era (Pre- Lord of the rings). No question from the silmarillion, is left unanswered after you've read this hyper-detailed book about the fallen ainur, Melkor, most known under the name Morgoth meaning "the enemy of the world". Here is described the rise of Arda, the assignments given by Eru, the lord of all, to the ainur (or the Valar in their earthly presence), AND how Melkor (who was Eru's favorite and most skilled of all) fell from grace and lusted to control the earth and everything in it. In this book , you will find how immensely great was Morgoth's power and how he could even distort Eru's very designs in the birth of the universe. It also includes detailed information about particular elven kings, half elven and men, who had a particularly important role in the history and shaping of Beleriand and Middle-earth. a lot of readers of the silmarillion felt that many details werent sufficiently explored and found the story hard to follow. Morgoth's Ring provides the 'in depth' look required to further appreciate the silmarillion. All fans of middle-earth and fantasy are urged to get this superb annal of the history of middle-earth and dive once more into the realm of the tree-light gems...

Drafts of 'The Silmarillion' Part I

'Morgoth's Ring' and 'The War of the Jewels' are both collections of draft material which would become the postumously published 'The Silmarillion'. In that sense, they stand in the same relation to 'The Silmarillion' as Volumes VI through IX of 'The History of Middle Earth' stand to 'The Lord of the Rings'. The difference is that while Tolkien senior himself published LotR, 'The Silmarillion' was incomplete at the time of Tolkien's death, so these are commentaries on an imcomplete work. If, like me, you compulsively buy everything with Tolkien's name on it, this will make no differnce. But, if, like me, you find the story of the Valar and the origins of the elves in general to be the most interesting part of 'The Silmarillion, then you will find 'Morgoth's Ring' the more interesting of the two volumes. In the end, both volumes add more pieces to that great, but slightly ephemeral quality of deep historicity which makes LoTR and 'The Hobbit' stand head, shoulders, and chest above virtually every other fantasy fiction ever written.

More in depth Silmarillion writings, and more depth than you could ever imagine

Part 1 starts out with another version of the Ainulindale. Tolkien would always be revising his stories and the reason for it could be many things. In the Ainulindale he rewrote it to make radical changes to the cosmology. It is very easy to see why most of his writings were never finished, every little change he made would throw off the entire Middle-Earth world from what it was before.

Part 2 has the Annals of Aman. Since changes were always being made, Tolkien always made new annals of his earliest stories. The problem here is that he go from making brief descriptions to giving full writings. Every time he rewrote something, it would get longer.

The biggest chunk of the book is part 3 which goes over a later version of the Silmarillion and that piece of work really started coming together at this point. It clearly had no chance of ever getting finished, but it is fun to see how many changes were made every time it was rewritten.

Part 4 is one of the writings that Tolkien seems to have written solely to help explain Middle-Earth to himself. It is a fascinating conversation between an male elf and a woman talking about where their souls go after they die. It also talks about the dark origins of man which are only briefly mentioned in all other works by Tolkien.

Part 5 is called 'Myths Transformed' and gives a good idea about how crazy Tolkien became with his work and why the Silmarillion was never finished. One of the many things he had a problem with was the trees of Valinor, and how they came to be. He thought if a fruit of the tree became the Sun, how would a whole tree not burn the land around it? It is amazing that something like this could halt him for so long. I think any Tolkien fan would be able overlook something small like the trees of Valinor if the Silmarillion could have just been completed.

Overall another book packed full of great Middle-Earth information.

A Small, Humorous, Vulgar Taste of Argentina

This is a small, humorous, vulgar taste of Argentine humor and arrogance. As someone who lived for a total of twenty-nine months in neighboring Uruguay, and who vacationed in Buenos Aires, I could relate to this book perhaps a little too well. Unfortunately for me, I didn't discover this book until years later, when an Argentine pen-pal recommended it to me.

I recommend this book to any student of Spanish who is not easily offended, and who prefers their language instruction in small, humorous doses.

I'm 24 and born and raised 4th generation in Texas. I grew up in a predominately white community where I hardly spoke Spanish. It wasn't until college I took up the language to further entact my heritage. The Spanish I learned in school isn't near the same as Argentinian. It's like Irelands' English grammer to American, they're two worlds apart. I plan on traveling Argentina and want to be the conversationist while I'm there. The Spanish I grew up with was very formal as my grandparents were former professors. I lack the derrogative terms so to speak. This small booklet is a large stepping stone for my goals. Good luck, and take this in with a grain of salt.

This book is great for those wanting to travel to Argentina (specifically BsAs). !Che Boludo! includes a great deal of the local Argentine slang and other "colorful" phrases that they just don't teach you in Spanish class.

A great resource if planning on studying abroad or expatriating. If nothing else, a humorous reference guide for you and your Spanish-speaking buddies.

The theoretical underpinning of this book is essentially the Navier-Stokes Equation. A non-linear integro-differential equation. You can spend hours with the book, enjoying the intricacies of the various special cases, that together form fluid mechanics.
The advent of ever-faster computers, with massive memories, has also increased the practicality of a subfield - computational fluid mechanics. We can now realistically simulate many problems in three dimensions, with boundaries that are not just simple geometries, like a sphere or a half plane. Appropriately, the book gives CFD careful exposition.
Of course, the book also has an experimental side. Various instruments and experimental setups are discussed.
